What mattered at Mobile World Congress, day 2: BlackBerry, Samsung's Galactic dominance, and plucky Kazam

BARCELONA, Spain -- Hard to believe it's only day 2 of Mobile World Congress, which already feels like it's been going on for months. The CNET team is now fluent in Catalan, cannot remember any food that isn't tapas, and has renounced all other religions for that of Lionel Messi.

With most of the main announcements out of the way, it's time for some of the smaller companies to share the limelight. Speaking of which...

One year on, Tizen has its sights set on smartwatches and cars

Samsung made a splash at last year's Mobile World Congress by showing off the first reference device running not Android, but Tizen OS, an open-source operating system created by Samsung and Intel, among others. A year on at MWC 2014, what has changed for Tizen?

The year has seen big changes, not in the look and design of the software, but in its application. While last year, headlines shouted about Samsung running Tizen on its phones, Tizen has since become something of a poster child as the OS of choice for various connected devices and wearable tech.

Samsung's Gear Fit doesn't run Android or Tizen

BARCELONA, Spain -- As if Samsung didn't already have enough operating systems to worry about, it's now adding another. Well, kinda.

The Korean electronics giant loaded its new fitness band, the Gear Fit, with a real-time operating system instead of the Android software used in its phones or the Tizen software used in its new Gear smartwatches.

"It's a much simpler OS, and it helps us keep the battery life three to four days whereas Gear 2 is [about] two days," Seshu Madhavapeddy, senior vice president of product and technology at Samsung Telecommunications America, told … Read more

Samsung still 'evaluating' a Tizen phone for this year

BARCELONA, Spain -- Don't hold your breath for a Samsung Tizen smartphone anytime soon.

The Korean electronics giant has been working on such a device for months, but the product continues to face delays. The company most recently said it would release a phone in February. But instead, Samsung made its first Tizen push with wearables. It's still working on a Tizen-based phone, but just when that will launch is unclear.

"We are carefully evaluating the market needs and opportunity to introduce the Tizen-based smartphone during this year," Young-hee Lee, head of marketing for Samsung's … Read more

Tizen chairman, ever the optimist, says smartphone will hit market in 2014

BARCELONA, Spain -- Tizen Association Chairman Ryoichi Roy Sugimara is very protective of his "baby."

That baby, of course, is the upstart operating system Tizen and, by extension, any device running on the platform.

In explaining the continued delay of a smartphone running on Tizen, Sugimara said the association and its carrier partners are carefully looking at the best market for a launch. Sugimara told CNET that a phone will indeed hit the market some time this year, although he declined to get more specific.

"You'll see a real commercial launch in some markets," he … Read more

Tizen signs up new allies, but still no real phone

BARCELONA, Spain--The Tizen bandwagon is getting bigger, but it hasn't traveled far.

The Tizen Association on Sunday talked up its 15 new partners, including notable names such as Japanese carrier SoftBank, Sprint, Baidu, and ZTE. A no-show has been any smartphone running the operating system, with only reference units on display.

"I've heard twice that Tizen is dead," said Tizen Association Chairman Roy Sugimura, who is also an executive at Japanese carrier NTT Docomo. "Tizen isn't dead."

Tizen is one of several upstart operating systems attempting to break into the market, with the … Read more

Gear 2 running Tizen: Smart move for Samsung smartwatch?

BARCELONA, Spain -- Samsung's first move with Tizen may not be big, but it could prove to be pretty savvy.

The Korean electronics giant has been working on Tizen-based smartphones for months, but the first global product to use the open-source Linux operating system won't be a phone. Rather, Samsung on Monday will unveil a new version of its Gear smartwatch that runs the company's Tizen software rather than Google's Android operating system. Introducing Tizen to the masses via Gear may be one of the smartest moves Samsung could make. The reason? Apps.
