5TB hard drive is here, inside LaCie's latest Thunderbolt storage systems

The hard-drive capacity race has just started again as LaCie announced today the availability of a 5TB internal hard drive in its three Thunderbolt series, the 5big, the 2big, and the d2.

This is the first time a new capacity was announced not by the original maker, which is Seagate in this case. However, LaCie has been part of Seagate since 2012. This is a SATA3 Desktop HDD internal drive that spins at 7,200rpm, model number ST5000DX000.

The addition of the 5TB drive option (up from 4TB) means that LaCie's Thunderbolt series can now up its top capacities … Read more

Dell workstations could embrace Thunderbolt later this year

A Windows PC maker could be forgiven for not leaping to embrace a technology like Thunderbolt that rival Apple has so loudly promoted. But it looks like Dell will build in the high-speed port technology on workstations coming as soon as this year, CNET has learned.

"I feel Thunderbolt has become more mainstream for the high end," said Pat Kannar, director of marketing for Dell's Precision line of workstation products. "We're definitely looking at adding it into systems coming out later this year and next year."

HP debuts its Z1 G2, a 27-inch touch-screen workstation

Hewlett-Packard announced its the Z1 G2 workstation, a model with a 27-inch display that brings touch-screen technology to this corner of the high-end computing market.

The Z1 G2 is somewhat similar to the 2012-era Z1, an all-in-one design with the processor, memory, and other computing components housed behind the screen. Both can be pivoted so the screen is flat, something particularly useful with the G2 so people get better touch control.

The starting price of the Intel-powered machine is $2000, HP said Monday at CES 2014. It'll ship in late January.

Like other new HP workstations, the Z1 G2 … Read more

Apple's Mac Pro goes on sale; top-end model costs $9,600

The $3,000 entry-level configuration of Apple's new Mac Pro is nothing to sneeze at -- but if you want more horsepower, the price goes up rapidly as high as $9,600.

Apple's distinctively glossy black and cylindrical Mac Pro just went on sale Thursday, with a ship date of December 30. Apple teased customers for more than a year about the new machine, which replaces a much bulkier and now quite elderly Mac Pro. Mac Pros are geared for people with demanding computing chores, with video editing at the top of the list: each step up in … Read more

How to transfer large amounts of data between Macs quickly

If you need to transfer a file or two from one Mac to another, you may use a service like Dropbox, or copy them to a USB drive and move them manually; however, there are some built-in options that can be substantially faster, especially if you are transferring large amounts of data up to numerous gigabytes.

To do this you might consider simply enabling file sharing on one of the systems, and then connecting to it from the second computer over whatever network connection you are currently using; however, in doing so you may end up using a relatively slow … Read more

CalDigit begins shipping $200 Thunderbolt docking station

Intel's Thunderbolt port is becoming less exotic as it spreads beyond Macs to high-end PCs, and Thunderbolt docking stations are following suit.

CalDigit on Monday began shipping its $200 Thunderbolt Station, a device that plugs into a computer's Thunderbolt port to provide three USB 3.0 ports, separate audio input and output jacks, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a second Thunderbolt port so more devices can be attached. That's a notch cheaper than alternatives that have been on the market so far.

The idea is that a person with a laptop can plug in … Read more

The storage device supports all RAID configurations available for the amount of hard drives being used, … Read more

MacBook Pro Retina 2013 teardown: Tough fix, good parts

It should come as no surprise that the 0.7-inch-thick 15.4-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Pro Retina models aren't easy to repair. iFixit said this week their repairability is still rock bottom.

Thin laptops, especially those from Apple, aren't known for easy accessibility or repair as their cases are often completely sealed.

That hasn't changed with the 2013 MacBook Pro Retina.

Both the 13-inch and 15-inch MBP got a repairability score of 1 out of 10 (10 being the easiest to repair) from iFixit, matching the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina 2012 models.

Thunderbolt arrives in HP's mobile, desktop workstations

A strong ally has given Intel more support for Thunderbolt as Hewlett-Packard announced new workstation PCs that come with the high-speed connection technology.

Thunderbolt is useful for high-end machines with heavy-duty data-transfer demands such as fast external storage systems or video capture. It's built into all new Macs, if you include the next-gen Mac Pro, but it hasn't spread widely across the Windows market. During the Intel Developer Forum this week, though, HP announced its new workstations will have Thunderbolt support.

That includes the ZBook 15 and 17, machines that use the new Haswell generation of Core processors, … Read more
