TextWrangler for Mac review

While not a word processor, TextWrangler for Mac does an excellent job editing, searching, and transforming texts and HTML codes. It is a great tool for programmers and server administrators and a good runner up for the "top text editor for Mac" title.

Pros

Fast and functional: TextWrangler for Mac performs well when it comes to case and order changing and can do not only "find and replace," but also "replace and find," wherein you implement the text change first before you inspect the text lines to check if the changes made were what … Read more

Review: Evernote keeps all your thoughts organized and accessible

Evernote for Mac makes it possible to write yourself reminders and notes, and keep them stored and organized in the cloud for safekeeping. By installing additional apps for your other devices you can also access your notes on the go from an iPad or iPhone.

We installed Evernote for Mac via the App Store, and were brought directly to a screen for creating an account. Once inside the app, we poked around, appreciating its attractive and functional interface. On our test machine, we wrote a quick note and attached a file to it. Switching over to an iPhone, we fired … Read more

Notepad2 4.2.25 Review

Notepad is a survivor. Built into Windows for ages, it's still doing yeoman service as a fast, lightweight, easy-to-use text editor. Notepad2 from Flo's Freeware is a Scintilla-based text editor with syntax highlighting. It's called Notepad2 because it follows the original Notepad's principles. It's compact and lightweight: The entire program folder is about 766KB. This makes it fast: Notepad2 loads quickly. But Notepad2 does a whole lot more than Notepad. Despite their many similarities, there really is no comparison: Notepad2 is a far more capable tool than Notepad for any text document. But for those … Read more

Free capable text editor

If BBEdit is a time-honored king among text editors, then TextWrangler is a worthy prince -- always a short step behind BBEdit in features, but also always (amazingly) free. If you're looking for a word processor (i.e., something to create pretty or specially formatted documents), look elsewhere. But if you need to edit, search, and transform text and HTML, TextWrangler is a well-oiled and efficiently designed machine.

TextWrangler 4 catches this app up with Mac OS X Lion with an updated interface and preferences, as well as features like full-screen mode. This update also brings in many of … Read more

How to talk to Siri

Given recent PR battles that Apple has been having with regard to Siri's search results, there are some basic syntax tips for talking to Siri that can help improve your search results and the impact Siri has on your iPhone 4S experience.

You may think that Siri is capable of understanding any sort of commonly worded request, performing a search through various online databases, and producing a result that perfectly suits the needs of the user.

Yes, this is where the technology is going. No, it's not there yet.

In fact, for an Apple product (and one that … Read more

HTML editing, extra spicy

Taco HTML Edit is a Mac-only HTML and PHP editor, a good compromise between free editors and more-powerful (and expensive) Web development apps.

Taco HTML Edit's main window provides a relatively spare, streamlined hand-coding environment, with a toolbar that lets you save, print, find, batch find, preview, live preview, and insert special characters from a drop-down menu. You can also access Taco HTML Edit's Component Library from here, a relatively new addition to the program that gives you quick access to 22 ready-to-plug-in, cross-browser-tested components--everything from an image carousel to a scrolling, fixed-height table. These components vary in … Read more

Word processing tool

Write Source provides users with a word processor for .txt documents that successfully imitates Word. In addition, the program offers an added feature that will help users search for words.

We felt instantly comfortable with this program's interface since it smoothly mimics Microsoft Word all the way down to its layout. The Help file's instructions were necessary to master some of the more complicated features, but basic writing was a snap. Our previous experience with word processors that save as .txt files had been disappointing since they always seemed to fall short of Word with their clumsy layouts … Read more
