7 capable crossovers and SUVs

From its big, dirty off-road roots, the modern SUV has evolved to serve a variety of purposes. Sure, there are still got rock-crawling, river-fjording brutes, but this is a category where you'll also find compact and sport crossovers, vehicles that are softer and more luxurious, and a few examples that stretch the boundaries of what can be considered an SUV.

We've rounded up a few of our favorite examples, in no particular order, that span the gamut of modern SUVs and crossovers. Be sure to sound off in the comments section and let us know what's your favorite SUV. … Read more

Cadillac preps for 2015 Escalade reveal

Cadillac may have been all about sports sedans and electrified coupes for the past few years, but spin the clock back a decade and the Escalade luxury SUV was the model that defined the brand. On October 7, Cadillac will unveil the first major update to the marquee since 2006 when it debuts the 2015 Cadillac Escalade.

So far, the only official peek that we have of this updated model is a shot of the cabin and dashboard released by the automaker today along with the promise of "state-of-the-art advanced technology" and "luxurious handcrafted elements." Reading … Read more

Mercedes-Benz chases BMW with new GLA SUV

Considering the dimensions of the new GLA-Class from Mercedes-Benz, to be unveiled at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt next month, I had pretty much the same reaction as when I first got a look at the BMW X1. Mercedes-Benz can call it an SUV all it wants, but the car reads as a wagon.

The new model measures 14.5 feet long, and just under 5 feet high. Most people will be able to look right over the roof.

That Mercedes-Benz may be copying the similarly dimensioned BMW X1 does not make it a stupid strategy, as the X1 … Read more

2014 Toyota Highlander gets a much-needed update in NYC

NEW YORK--Toyota's soccer-mom-mobile gets an infusion of cabin tech, modernized safety features, and an updated sense of style with the debut of the 2014 Toyota Highlander midsize SUV at the New York International Auto Show.

With the previous generation pushing seven years old, the Highlander was very much in need of an update. Also, the SUV still seats up to eight passengers across its three rows or seven passengers when equipped with the optional second-row captain's chairs. Both configurations benefit from increased interior volume for passengers and cargo thanks to a new, double-wishbone rear suspension that removes the … Read more

130 sweet rides from the 2011 SEMA Show

The 2011 SEMA Show has come to a close, but I've still got an SD card full of photos of the hundreds of wild rides displayed there.

With that in mind, I've rounded up 130 photos of some of the hottest rides found on the floor of the SEMA Show. The cars have been split into four bite-size categories for quick navigation.

There were plenty of Asian imports to be found, with styles ranging from VIP to street tuner to race ready. This was the first year that I was able to check out the anime-inspired Itasha style … Read more
