Pros

Fast and accessible: Because it features only free, mostly top-rated apps, 1Mobile Market proves easier to digest than Google Play, helping you to discover interesting titles that you might otherwise miss.

Powerful search: The autocomplete feature for the search bar, rather than showing you suggested keywords like in Google Play, provides … Read more

App Stores review

App Stores helps you discover all the major sources for Android apps, as well as some of the more obscure ones. But rather than directly enabling you to download apps from those stores, it requires that you install each store's app, so that it ends up being nothing more than a list of shops with useful links. Still, for app lovers it's a handy tool, one that can help you discover thousands of interesting apps that are not available on Google Play.

You won't find App Stores in the Google Play Store, so you have to grab … Read more

New San Francisco Apple Store gets final approval

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday gave final approval for a major new Apple store to be built in Union Square, a high-traffic tourist area in downtown San Francisco.

The new store is designed by Foster + Partners, the UK-based architecture firm that designed the company's new spaceship-like headquarters in Cupertino, slated to open in 2016. So clearly, the new location is something of a flagship store for the company, especially given its proximity to Apple's corporate home in Silicon Valley. Apple already has an existing store nearby, on Stockton Street.

"We are thrilled that the … Read more

Would you like a brick-and-mortar headphone store in your town?

Jamey Warren owns a terrific headphone Web site, HeadRoom, and it's been a valuable resource for headphone buyers for 20 years. Since he already stocks a large inventory of headphones opening a physical store seemed like the next logical step. Great idea, but Warren's company is based in Bozeman, MT, a small town of less than 40,000 people. The store required additional staff and Warren had to rent a space downtown, but he was eager to take the chance. He sees the store as a work in progress, and if all goes according to plan Warren will … Read more

An awesome small room/high-end stereo system

One of the most important factors in selecting the right hi-fi components is room size. If you're lucky enough to have a big living space (over 500 square feet), I'd recommend floor-standing speakers. Big rooms also soak up amplifier power; smaller rooms need a lot less. Here in NYC, most folks live in small apartments, and they'll get terrific sound with midsize bookshelf speakers and small amps.

I was thinking about the stereo/room size ratio question during a recent visit to In Living Stereo, one of my favorite NYC hi-fi shops. I was listening to a … Read more

Shorten, track URLs on Android with Google URL Shortener

Google has long provided the URL shortening service goo.gl. Users are able to log in to the site, paste a long URL and have it shortened by Google. On top of the URL being share friendly, Google would also provide analytics detailing who is actually clicking on the link.

Early this week Google released an Android app for the service, taking link shrinking and tracking mobile.

The app is free and can be downloaded from the Google Play store here.

There are plenty of options for link shortening, with most social networks doing this on your behalf, but by … Read more

Book a Genius Bar appointment from your iOS device

The Genius Bar is typically the best place to visit when having issues with an Apple device, but don't forget to make an appointment first. Each time I make a visit to the store, I stand and watch as customer after customer comes in, thinking Apple takes walk-in Genius Bar appointments quickly. More often then not, the customer has to book an appointment and come back at a later time.

Save yourself some time the next time you need some troubleshooting advice, and book the appointment directly from your iOS device while you're out and about.

Sony will close some stores in the US as part of its restructuring efforts, the company said Wednesday.
