PC shipments to keep falling through 2018 -- report

The PC market will face an increasingly rougher patch over the next few years, says research firm IDC.

In its latest Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker report released Tuesday, IDC said it lowered its PC shipment forecast for 2014 by 2 percent and its longer-term estimate by just under 1 percent. Global PC shipments are now expected to decline from 315.1 million last year to 295.9 million this year and 291.7 million in 2018.

Smartphone shipments hit the 1B mark for the first time

For the first time ever, more than 1 billion smartphones were shipped worldwide in 2013. This is mostly thanks to Android.

New data from research firm IDC shows that Android stayed strong throughout the year reaching a total of 793.6 million shipments -- this gave it 78.6 percent market share. While Apple's iOS held a steady second place with 153.4 million shipments and 15.2 percent market share. Together the two operating systems accounted for 95.7 percent of all smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter of 2013, and 93.8 percent for the full year.… Read more

Tablet market up 50 percent, led by Apple, Samsung, Amazon

The holidays proved to be a boon for the tablet market. Worldwide shipments of the iPad, Kindle, Galaxy Note, and other tablets grew to 76.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2013. That's 62.4 percent growth over the previous quarter. For the full year of 2013, tablet shipments totaled 217.1 million, up from 144.2 million in 2012 -- which equals a growth rate of 50.6 percent.

Samsung tops Apple in global smartphone shipments

Global smartphone shipments have reached an all-time high for the third quarter, according to a Strategy Analytics study released Monday. For the first time ever, more than 250 million smartphones were shipped worldwide in a single quarter, which is a 45 percent increase over last year. And Samsung topped all other phone makers for global market share.

Gartner: 'Back-to-school' PC sales don't make the grade

Following up IDC's third quarter report on Wednesday, Gartner followed up with its own assessment of the PC industry. The numbers lined up for the most part, but Gartner painted a darker picture.

Gartner research found that worldwide PC shipments totaled 80.5 million units in the third quarter of 2013, concurring an approximate 8.6 percent decline from the same time last year.

According to the tech research firm, Q3 marks the "sixth consecutive quarter of declining worldwide shipments.

PC sales decline is finally slowing, IDC says

For most of 2013, the narrative of the PC industry has been on the verge of becoming a bloody horror story. But the bleeding has finally slowed, based on the latest figures from IDC.

Tablet shipments forecasted to outpace PCs by 2015

As a slew of new tablets were announced over the last few days, data shows that tablet shipments will soon surpass those of personal computers.

A report by research firm IDC predicts that for the first time more tablets will be shipped in the fourth quarter of 2013 than PC shipments; and, by 2015, annual tablet shipments will top PC shipments.

Outlook for PC shipments gets even bleaker

Things aren't looking so great for the PC market.

According to latest figures by research firm IDC, worldwide PC shipments are expected to drop by 9.7 percent in 2013. The reason, according to the firm, is due to a cessation in desktops and notebooks shipping to emerging markets, compounded by an uptick in smartphone and tablet shipments.

The PC market is expected to decline through at least 2014, although the firm believes a modest single-digit growth could be seen in early 2015.

Smartphone shipments to hit 1.5 billion in 2017

The smartphone market is already huge, but things are expected to get even bigger in the coming years.

By 2017, worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to hit 1.5 billion, new data from research firm IHS suggests. By the end of this year, IHS expects worldwide smartphone shipments to to reach nearly 900 million units.

The total install base for smartphones worldwide surpassed 1 billion in the third quarter of 2012, an important milestone for the smartphone industry.

iPhone shipments hit at least 29 million last quarter, says analyst

Apple could surprise many a Wall Street analyst with calendar second-quarter iPhone shipments of 29 million.

The shipment figure projected by Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty surpasses the consensus estimate of 26.5 million. And the number could reach much higher, Huberty revealed in an investors note released on Wednesday.

The analyst said that demand data from the company's AlphaWise Smartphone Tracker, estimates from U.S. Telecom analyst Simon Flannery, and supply chain checks by Asia/Pac Tech analyst Jasmine Lu all suggest 29 million to 32 million iPhone shipments.
