Staples will start closing stores to improve its chances of competing with online retailers.
The company on Thursday announced that it plans to close as many as 225 stores between now and the end of 2015. The closures, which will affect only North American retail locations, are expected to help Staples save $500 million. The move follows the 40 net store closures Staples initiated last year.

Sony is edging closer to ditching yet another building.
The company has entered into an agreement to sell its old headquarters in Tokyo for $146.5 million, Yhe Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the deal. The building, in central Tokyo, was the company's headquarters from 1990 to 2007. It's now home to the company's medical operation and other ancillary operations.

Research firm The NPD Group released new data on Thursday showing that hardware sales were up 17 percent to $241 million in January compared to the same time last year. The US video game market appears to be stuck in a holding pattern. While there weren't any significant declines in consumer spending in 2013, there wasn't any noteworthy growth either.

Eliciting the opinions of 28 professional analysts and 17 amateur or independent analysts, Fortune uncovered iPad sales estimates ranging from 21 million to 28 million. Stirring together all the numbers yielded an average of 25 million, up around 10 percent from the 22.9 million sold in the prior year's quarter.

Apple could reveal record iPhone sales when it announces its December quarter results next week.
In an investors note out Tuesday, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said she expects unit sales of 54 million to 55 million for the final quarter of 2013, aka Apple's first fiscal quarter of 2014. That's slightly higher than the Wall Street consensus of around 53 million units. In contrast, Apple sold 47.8 million iPhones in the first fiscal quarter of 2013.

Last year, Nintendo's 3DS line of devices, which includes the 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS, reached 11.5 million lifetime unit sales across the US, the company revealed on Friday. Nintendo also sold over 16 million packaged and digital games for its 3DS line up in 2013, representing a 45 percent gain over the previous year.
