Staples to shutter up to 225 stores amid online pressures

Staples will start closing stores to improve its chances of competing with online retailers.

The company on Thursday announced that it plans to close as many as 225 stores between now and the end of 2015. Sony looks to shed former Tokyo headquarters -- report

Sony is edging closer to ditching yet another building.

The company has entered into an agreement to sell its old headquarters in Tokyo for $146.5 million, Yhe Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the deal. The building, in central Tokyo, was the company's headquarters from 1990 to 2007. It's now home to the company's medical operation and other ancillary operations.

PlayStation 4 beats out Xbox One as the best-selling console

In the battle for the best-selling console, Sony's PlayStation 4 has come out on top -- beating Microsoft's Xbox One -- for the month of January.

Research firm The NPD Group released new data on Thursday showing that hardware sales were up 17 percent to $241 million in January compared to the same time last year. However, since January 2013 was five weeks and January 2014 was four weeks -- normalized sales of gaming hardware shows a 47 percent increase. And, PlayStation led these sales.

Video game sales grow a measly 1 percent in 2013

The US video game market appears to be stuck in a holding pattern. While there weren't any significant declines in consumer spending in 2013, there wasn't any noteworthy growth either.

New research published Tuesday by The NPD Group shows that users in the US spent $15.39 billion on video games -- which is nothing to shake a stick at, but it's only 1 percent more than spending in 2012.
