Facebook sees surge in mobile ad sales -- report

Google still owns the biggest slice of mobile ad sales. But Facebook is increasingly carving up more of that pie, according to eMarketer.

The two giants together snagged more than two-thirds of last year's $17.96 billion in mobile ad sales, eMarketer reported Wednesday. Mobile ad spending worldwide surged by 105 percent last year and is forecast to jump another 75 percent this year to $31.45 billion.

Meg Whitman: Traditional PCs drive growth, not just tablets

Hewlett-Packard executives had a lot of positive things to say about PCs in the company's earnings conference call on Thursday. And CEO Meg Whitman said she's seeing renewed interest in traditional PCs over tablets in business.

"There is some momentum in a long overdue PC refresh. Zynga announces NaturalMotion acquisition alongside layoffs

Looking to bring its wayward financials back on track, Zynga revealed a handful of surprises during its 2013 fourth quarter earnings report on Thursday. While Zynga CEO Don Mattrick announced the acquisition of British gaming company NaturalMotion, he also said the company had to tighten its belt with company-wide layoffs. This comes with news of a 43.3 percent decrease in Zynga's revenue from a year ago.

As Surface surges, consumer PCs soften, Microsoft says

During its second-quarter earnings conference call, Microsoft said it's encouraged by the surge in revenue for the Surface tablet-laptop hybrid. But this is happening against a backdrop of a weak consumer PC market.

Microsoft on Thursday reported fiscal second-quarter results that were better than expected. The company had sales of $24.5 billion, or 78 cents per share. Wall Street had expected revenue of $23.7 billion with a profit of 68 cents a share.

Internet ad sales climb to $10.7 billion

Advertisers spent $10.69 billion on Internet advertisements in this last quarter, breaking an all-time record on ad spending, the Interactive Advertising Bureau reported Monday.

The trade group tracked a 15 percent year-over-year growth in ad dollars in the third quarter of 2013. In the third quarter of 2012, ad revenues totaled only $9.26 billion. The quarter's revenue was also a 4.2 percent rise from the second quarter of 2013.

Twitter doubles third-quarter revenue to $168 million

Twitter's revenue in the third quarter more than doubled compared with last year, according to an amended regulatory filing the microblogging company submitted Tuesday ahead of an IPO expected to land next month.

The San Francisco-based company recorded revenue of $168.6 million in the third quarter, up from $82.3 million in the year-ago period, an increase of 104 percent. However, the company's net loss increased to $64.6 million in the three-month period ended September 30 compared with $21.6 million a year earlier.

Mobile revenue growth slowing, seen declining by 2018

The heady days of wireless growth are near an end.

That's according to research firm Ovum, who warned that global wireless revenue was slowing as more and more people have signed up for cell phones. The industry will likely see its first revenue decline by 2018.

Google Glass could be a $3B-per-year cash cow

While Google Glass is currently a novelty product for select users, it could earn a good deal of cash for Google within the next few years.

According to AllThingsD, which spoke with financial analyst Robert S. Peck of SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, the wearable tech could be worth as much as $3.27 billion to Google in 2017, which is more than 3.7 percent of Google's estimated $86.4 billion total revenue for that year.
