Is wearing Google Glass to propose insane? Watch this and decide

Proposing marriage to your significant life-partner -- or even to Olga, the snake-charmer you met in a bar last week -- ought to be memorable.

You never know how many times in life you'll get to suggest marriage, while down on one knee, so it's worth preserving in your mind.

Should you enhance that need for preservation, though, by wearing glasses that make you look like an institutionalized escapee?

In order to celebrate Valentine's weekend -- yes, the one in which many couples choose to break up -- Google released a video that may live long in … Read more

Man proposes to woman on Reddit, uses memes and art

It's an act of love fit for the 21st century: a man posted a marriage proposal to his girlfriend on the popular Web site Reddit, and he pulled out all the stops -- or rather, memes -- for the task.

Defying the norm, Redditor SirTechnocracy came up with an unconventional way to pop the question by creating a gallery of amusing memes hinting at a proposal. On Monday morning, he posted a link to the gallery on AdviceAnimals, an area of Reddit that houses user-made memes, and awaited his girlfriend's reply. According to SirTechnocracy, his beloved browses Reddit every day and goes by the username Ladytechnocracy. (A little backstory: The couple met online, dated for a bit, and then moved in together a year ago.)… Read more

Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar get tentative green light in Calif.

After swinging a series of punches, it's looking like the state of California may be calling a truce with ride-sharing app companies.

The California Public Utilities Commission published a proposal on Tuesday that said it would allow companies like Uber, Sidecar, and Lyft to operate in the state if they adhered to certain guidelines. These guidelines require drivers to be licensed by the CPUC, go through criminal background checks, attend driver-training programs, carry $1 million per-incident insurance coverage, and have a zero-tolerance policy on drugs and alcohol.

"The Commission is aware that TNCs [Transportation Network Company] are a … Read more

Man forces lover to beat video game before getting proposal

The subject of love bedevils us all.

Yet once you've found it, how do you propose to the woman with whom you want to spend your doddering dotage?

For one gamer, there was an absolute solution: create a game that she would have to play to the end to win his heart.

I am tearfully grateful to Kotaku for revealing the tale of EquinnoxX, a passionate gamer.

He decided to meddle with a Contra cartridge in order to create the perfect proposal for his one true love.… Read more

Man proposes via language-learning app Duolingo

We've seen some pretty creative marriage proposals, but we never would have thought of proposing via a language-learning app. Flavio Esposito, on the other hand, seems to like thinking outside the down-on-one-knee box.

The Italian man's American girlfriend was using Duolingo to learn Italian, so he got in touch with the Duolingo team to come up with a surprise.

"She's learning my own language, and she enjoys it so much that I'm wondering if I could ask you to set up an exercise for her that would lead to the big question: 'Will you marry Flavio Esposito?'" he wrote.

The team, unable to resist either the challenge or the romance, set about writing some translation exercises for Kate to be dropped into her learning program. … Read more

Will she? The first marriage proposal via Google Glass

By my estimation, it takes a brave man to slap on some lens-less augmented-reality frames, say "OK, Glass, record a video," and then get down on one knee to ask for his lady's hand in marriage.

But that's exactly how Breon Nagy of Minneapolis, Minn., rolls.

After carrying a ring around for a few days while traveling in Europe and waiting for the perfect moment, he decided a visit to Leeds Castle in Kent, England, was the ideal time and place, and he pretty much nailed it.… Read more

Amazon proposes a colossal biospherelike Seattle campus

The latest fad for tech companies' new office buildings seems to involve making them as far-out and avant-garde as possible. And Amazon is the newest firm to jump on that train.

The e-commerce giant and gadget maker unveiled a slew of new drawings (PDF) on Tuesday that reveal a series of colossal, mirrored, biospherelike domes alongside a taller rectangular building that could be its new campus. The designs were created by architecture firm NBBJ and also include a copious amount of green space and landscaping.

The intent behind the design, according to the project proposal (PDF), is to "create an alternative environment" where "employees can work and socialize in a more natural, parklike setting."

"The generative idea is that a plant-rich environment has many positive qualities that are not often found in a typical office setting," the proposal says. "While the form of the building will be visually reminiscent of a greenhouse or conservatory, plant material will be selected for its ability to co-exist in a microclimate that also suits people." … Read more

RC helicopter airlifts engagement ring in for proposal

I feel kind of sorry for any geek looking to propose to a partner these days. The bar keeps getting set higher and higher. We've had a 4-hour video game proposal, an elaborate "Harry Potter" Quidditch proposal, and a physics paper proposal. Now a romantic guy figured out how to have the engagement ring flown in for his proposal, adding a bit of "Air Wolf" excitement to the proceedings.

As do many successful proposals, Jason's proposal to Christina began with a ruse. He lured her to Alamo Square park in San Francisco under the pretense of doing a photo shoot. He got her to talk to the camera and share her wishes for the baby they'll be having together. All was perfectly normal until a strange whirring noise came from the sky.… Read more

'Harry Potter' fans get engaged with custom Quidditch proposal

Geeks sure know how to propose to each other. They've done so by planting a field full of tulips, creating an elaborate Lego video, and writing a physics paper. So, how does a "Harry Potter" fan go about proposing to her girlfriend? With a custom-made Quidditch set.

Rachel Allison first met Jaquie Richards in college. Their friendship blossomed into love. As their affection for each other grew, so did a mutual passion for the "Harry Potter" series. When Allison decided it was time to propose, she knew a magic touch was called for.… Read more
