A deeper dive with the LG G Pro 2's camera

It's been a month since LG's massive 5.9-inch G Pro 2 launched in Korea, and the device has been slowly gaining traction with further roll outs in other Asian countries including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Although no information has been released about its potential availability in Europe and US, we were able to review the unlocked handset here in our San Francisco offices, and were impressed by its sharp 1080p screen and ultra fast quad-core performance.

But the phone also sports some serious camera chops as well. Giving the G Pro 2 a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and … Read more

The thinnest and lightest small tablets

In the beginning, tablets looked more like the televisions that strap onto the back of a car's seat more than something out of "2001: A Space Odyssey." However, I'm happy to report that the times have changed and so have tablet designs.

After Apple released the iPad (let's give credit where credit is due), aesthetics and design became a more prominent selling-point for the emerging portable devices. Overall, tablet girth has declined, ushering in the new era of thin slates, and we've gathered the ones so sleek, their predecessors wouldn't even recognize them … Read more

Superman + drone + GoPro = awesome POV footage

While we're all waiting around for Superman to hook up with Batman in 2016, we'll have to get our Man of Steel fix elsewhere. So let's saunter over to YouTube and join a couple million other people in watching a low-budget Superman POV adventure cleverly filmed with a drone and a GoPro.

The video features a guy in a classic spandex Superman outfit, complete with tightie reddies, flying through a city to return a lost GoPro camera to its owner. Naturally, it's not that simple. There are bad guys with guns, a cop who is also a fan, a building on fire, and a thrilling mid-air rescue of a damsel in distress.… Read more

LG's G Pro 2 sales spread to big Asian markets

LG Electronics has begun selling its G Pro 2 in some Asian countries, but people in other regions who want the big Android phone will have to wait to see if carriers express any interest.

The phone has a large 5.9-inch 1920x1080 screen, good performance, Android 4.4. KitKat, and the Knock Code mechanism for waking up and unlocking the phone. It's a companion to the LG's flagship G2 Android phone and several lower-end models with which the company is trying to make headway against its Korean rival, Samsung.

LG began selling it in February in Korea … Read more

How the LG G2 looked to 'Gangnam Style' for inspiration

BARCELONA, Spain -- Ramchan Woo is a big fan of Korean pop superstar Psy.

OK, with nearly 2 billion views on YouTube, who didn't at one time bob to the rhythm of the mega-viral "Gangnam Style" music video? But Woo, who is the head of LG's mobile platform planning division, did more than just sing and dance along to Psy's infectiously catchy beat, he used the artist and his video as inspiration for the Korean company's flagship G2 smartphone.

"He was different," Woo said as he sat next to me during a … Read more

Large iPad ditched? Not dead yet, says analyst

A large Apple tablet isn't out of the question this year, an analyst told CNET, in the wake of a report today saying the device is "shelved."

"The problem so far is that the use-case hasn't been made for a large tablet yet," said Rhoda Alexander, director of tablet and monitor research at IHS Technology.

That sentiment was echoed in a CNET review of the large Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, which said interface and performance issues hold it back from being a laptop replacement.

A report today from Digitimes claimed that shipments … Read more

Transcend gives Mac Pro a 128GB memory upgrade option

For folks like video editors who really, really need a lot of memory, Transcend announced new memory modules that can bring Apple's new Mac Pro machines up to 128GB.

The option doubles the 64GB of RAM available in Mac Pros from Apple, but there's a catch: the DDR3 memory modules have a slower 1333MHz interface compared to the 1866MHz DDR3 memory Apple ships. It'll still be a whole lot faster than an SSD or, heaven forfend, a hard drive.

Transcend also offers 1866MHz modules that max out at 64GB. The memory is "fully tested," Transcend R&D Director Angus Wu saidRead more

Analysts on Apple: Looking to iPhone 6 upside

Wedge Partners and Pacific Crest weighed in on the rumored iPhone 6 this week, with Wedge also offering speculation on other possible products like the iWatch and a bigger iPad as well as strategies for services at Apple.

Overall, the research note from Wedge Partners' Brian Blair, as posted by Barron's, was upbeat, stating that "Apple's next array of products" provide an "opportunity" for investors. Apple shares have an upside this year of more than 20 percent, he said.

Andy Hargreaves at Pacific Crest was also optimistic, citing the iPhone 6.

How to set up Knock Code on the LG G Pro 2

In an effort to compete with Samsung and its powerful Galaxy S brand, LG announced the G2 in the fall of 2013. The flagship smartphone was the company's first device to be released on every major US carrier. In addition to high-end specs, the G2 stood out from the crowd with rear facing buttons and numerous unique software features. One of those features was KnockOn, which allowed users to turn the phone's display on or off by simply double-tapping the screen.

The KnockOn feature has since made its way to a number of other LG phones, such as … Read more
