How to use Keynote to control...Keynote on iOS, Mac

Instead of requiring another app to control Keynote presentations from another device, Apple updated Keynote on iOS to act as a remote.

In order to get the remote functionality to work, there's some extra steps you'll need to take both on your iOS device, and your Mac.

Before you can control a presentation on another device (Mac or iOS), you'll need to enable remote control. To enable it on a Mac, launch Keynote and click on File > Preferences. From there, select the Remotes section and check the box to enable the feature.

On iOS, you'll … Read more

Pinterest inspires gift givers with holiday gift guides

Shopping for gifts can be difficult. It's sometimes impossible to find the right present for certain people -- there are those people who have everything and those who don't want anything. To tackle this conundrum, Pinterest is trying out ways to help gift givers this year.

Ahead of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping frenzy weekend, the social network has rolled out two separate holiday resources -- the Holiday Giving Guide and the Holiday Gifts Feed.

"In the spirit of the season of Pinspiration, we're unveiling our first-ever Holiday Giving Guide," Pinterest's head … Read more

The latest Keynote is a complete overhaul that will improve your presentations

Keynote is Apple's presentation software that lets you choose a template, create and edit slides, add animations and transitions, and has numerous charts, tables, and graphs to get your message across. Keynote is one of three apps from Apple's productivity suite that also include Pages and Numbers.

Like the other new iWork apps that were released in October, 2013, Keynote was built from the ground up for both iOS and Mac, with the iOS version seeing improvements, while the Mac version has lost some features to give both a level playing field. Due to a backlash of user … Read more

Review: Teach young children with Animals for Kids

Animals for Kids offers pictures and sounds of various animals to help kids learn. With its basic design and operation, young kids can easily master this learning tool, but older kids might want more than Animals for Kids can offer.

There's no real setup for Animals for Kids. Just install it and it's ready to go. The interface is very basic, with 60 multicolored text blocks containing animal names on the right. There's no Help file, but onscreen instructions guide you through the easy process: Click on a block and the image of an animal appears on … Read more

Review: BDayPresent has a handful of free birthday greetings you can share

BDayPresent is a great idea but lacks a lot of the features and depth needed to make it a truly useful birthday wishes app for your iOS device. With a limited number of videos, no deep Facebook integration, and mediocre production values for most of the videos, this free app lacks the kind of versatility needed for anyone who knows more than a half-dozen people whose birthdays they'd like to recognize.

The app is fairly straightforward. Open it and you'll find eight video messages with different types of birthday greetings -- one from Elmo, one from a girl … Read more

Adobe begins testing Ginger, its video presentation iPad app

Adobe Systems has begun letting people test Ginger, its new iPad app for creating video presentations, but only in secret.

"Ginger is now in beta, and you're invited to join the Ginger prerelease program, which will give you exclusive access to Ginger before it's released to the public," the company said Tuesday in a message to those who signed up to try the software. "You'll be able to share the videos you create using Ginger with anyone, so you can share your story."

Beta testers will be able to share their stories, but … Read more

Adobe dabbling with iPad app to rival PowerPoint

Adobe Systems, in an apparent effort to tap into the computer industry's move to mobile devices, is involved with a tablet software project called Ginger to help people create compelling presentations and sales pitches.

"A great story, well told, can change the world, but showing a great story is hard. You have to be a writer, an artist, an animator, and you have to have a lot of time," a video about Ginger argues. With Ginger, though, people can "make an impact in minutes."

The software lets people create videos that draw on a library … Read more

Get Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) free

This is an update of a deal I wrote about a few months back -- for those who missed it the first time around!

Earlier this year I noted that Kingsoft Office Free 2013 might just be the best Microsoft Office alternative you can get, especially if you need only the core elements: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Kingsoft offers a Pro version, of course, one that includes more goodies. A one-year license normally sells for $29.95, but today only, BitsDuJour has Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) absolutely free.

Why bother with the Pro version when the free version … Read more
