Verizon has dipped its toes in the installment plan option with its Edge program, but the carrier's CFO sees the subsidy model as still the safer option.

In a presentation Monday at a Deutsche Bank conference, Verizon Communications Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo talked about the intricacies of offering customers subsidized phones versus those paid off via an installment plan. Verizon's Edge program does give subscribers the ability to pay off the full price of a mobile device in installments. Launched last July, Edge follows pricing options similar to those found in AT&T's Next and … Read more

Leading to the gigabit promised land?

Editor's note: This is a guest post by Blair Levin, whose bio is below. CNET invited him to write about the debate behind broadband infrastructure in the United States.

Last summer, Israel announced a plan to deploy a world-leading, gigabit broadband network nationwide. Cisco CEO John Chambers, in announcing his company's investment in the project, predicted Israel will lead the world in the process of "country transformation" that digital technology can deliver.

Huh? The United States invented the lion's share of that technology. Why isn't Chambers talking about the United States? That the CEO … Read more

AT&T goes on the offensive with cheaper family plans

AT&T is showing it can get aggressive with pricing too.

The Dallas-based telecommunications company unveiled a new series of family plans designed to entice new users and keep existing ones on its service. The plan launches Sunday.

It's likely the latest sign of the competitive pressures on AT&T. The fourth quarter has seen both AT&T and Verizon post slowing growth as T-Mobile … Read more

Verizon's Share Everything family data plan is getting a little more affordable.
