U.S. warns of cyberattacks on gas pipeline companies

U.S. gas pipeline operators have been targeted in sophisticated phishing attacks since at least December, with the Department of Homeland Security helping firms deal with the incidents since March, the DHS and an industry expert said.

"DHS's Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team has been working since March 2012 with critical infrastructure owners and operators in the oil and natural gas sector to address a series of cyber intrusions targeting natural gas pipeline companies," DHS spokesman Peter Boogaard said in an e-mail sent to CNET today.

"The cyber intrusion involves sophisticated spear-phishing activities targeting … Read more

Rotate and reorient pipes to solve the plumbing puzzle

In Plumber for Android, your job is to rotate and reorient pipes in order to get a water line to flow correctly. It's simple to play, but challenging to complete.

To play, just tap a pipe to rotate it. Each level is filled with disconnected pipes scattered across your screen, so in most cases, you'll have to tap away at dozens of pipes in order to create a continuous line. And to make things a bit more challenging, not all pipes are used to solve each level, which can leave you concentrating on a bunch of useless plumbing … Read more

Toyota opens hydrogen station in California

Toyota opened the first hydrogen refueling station in the U.S. that is connected directly to a hydrogen pipeline.

Unlike nearby Santa Monica and Irvine hydrogen refueling stations, this new facility, located in Torrance, Calif., on the Toyota campus, doesn't use trucks to bring hydrogen gas on-site. Instead, it receives a steady supply of hydrogen fuel from Air Products' hydrogen pipeline, which produces hydrogen at its plants in Wilmington and Carson, Calif.

Shell leases the land from Toyota, and manages the station for the manufacturer. The station will service Toyota's fleet of 100 fuel cell test vehicles that … Read more

Pipeline tool

Pipelining is an old concept in computing that basically involves directing the output of one process directly into another along a linear "pipeline," with each step processing the data in some way. It has many uses, such as serving as the basis for TenFityTwo's Pipelines, a free utility that lets you modify text or data files in numerous ways, in whole or just specific parts. You can quickly and easily make changes to columns, word, and field ranges; translate words and phrases; insert or remove lines of data; and more. Programmers can use it to save time … Read more

Updated: Aqueduct for iPhone

A couple of weeks ago, I put in my picks for the CNET 100 best iPhone apps (check out all the CNET editors' picks here). One title I chose, Aqueduct, continues to be a go-to game for me whenever I have a few moments.

For those who haven't played, Aqueduct combines the old sliding tile and pipeline types of games into an enjoyable and challenging puzzle experience with tons of levels to conquer. Unique board tiles add to the challenge with some that teleport your piece to a different part of the board and others that act as conveyor … Read more

Complete the pipeline

Aqueduct takes a page from those popular classic pipeline-type puzzle games, bringing the same challenging gameplay to your touch-screen iPhone or iPod Touch. Like many online versions of the game, the mission in Aqueduct is to use available tiles to create a pipeline between a spigot and drain before you turn on the water supply. Aqueduct adds to the old pipeline formula by including conveyor belt tiles, teleports, door switches, and more, to create a fun and challenging time-waster that's easy to pick up and play wherever you are.

When we first started playing Aqueduct, we weren't immediately … Read more
