Review: Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix HD is a very fun adventure game

Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix HD brings a sense of storytelling and adventure to the iPad that perfectly fits the format. Also available in a smaller iPhone-friendly version, the iPad edition is the way to go, with bigger buttons, easier-to-read menus, and better responses when tapping doors, small buttons, etc.

What makes the Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix HD edition better than the standard edition for iPhone is also what makes the game good. This is an adventure-style game in the classic sense and while there are plenty of such games for … Read more

Review: Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix is a fine adventure game

Empress of the Deep 3 Legacy of the Phoenix is the newest in a line of adventure games from Big Fish Games that, while finely crafted, has a hard time on the iPhone's smaller screen. The depth and detail involved make it tough to fully engage with the number of options onscreen, text is small and hard to read, and hitting the right space is often difficult.

These things don't detract from what is otherwise a very enjoyable adventure game; but if you have an iPad, you will probably better enjoy the game on the larger screen on … Read more

Scarlett Johansson is the Siri you've been dreaming of

I am about to make some of your wildest imaginings come to life.

Please don't deny you have them. We've known each other for a while, and I've read some of your comments.

You have deeper relationships with your gadgets than you do with your humans.

You talk to your shrinks about this. You tell them that, to you, your gadget is Snooki or Maria Bartiromo. Or, in your ultimate dream world, Scarlett Johansson.

Your wish has been sent to Hollywood, and here I present the command performance of Johansson playing a Siri with whom you'll fall in love.

Review: Phoenix Slides lets you image search and play full-screen slideshows

Phoenix Slides for Mac helps you easily navigate through directories and subdirectories containing images and then play slideshows in full screen. The program is easy to use, performs fast, and, above all, is free.

Phoenix Slides for Mac offers a clean and easy-to-navigate interface. There is a separate window for image info., which you can close or move anywhere you like on the screen. It's fairly easy to get started, but there is comprehensive documentation available on the developer's Web site to guide users through all available features and shortcuts. Browsing through directories containing images is a smooth … Read more

Alligator's new prosthetic tail works swimmingly

Oddly enough, fish and wildlife officers in the dry, desert state of Arizona confiscate a fair number of alligators each year. Unfortunate alligator Mr. Stubbs was one of those captured critters when he was brought to the Phoenix Herpetological Society back in 2005. He arrived minus a very important body part: his tail.

Tailless Mr. Stubbs had to learn how to swim by paddling with his front feet, something that probably caused all the other alligators to snicker at him behind his back. More recently, the society and CORE Institute, a center specializing in orthopedic care for people, banded together to craft a new prosthetic tail for the gator.… Read more

Orbiting robot gas station gets closer to reality

It's a bummer running out of gas, especially when the nearest station is 22,000 miles away.

But a project to set up a gas station on the International Space Station made a big leap forward this week with the successful refueling of a mock satellite by a robot.

Dextre, a twin-armed robot from Canada, topped off the fuel tank in the mockup, showing how satellites' life can be extended, according to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Operating on the Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) module, Dextre removed safety caps and cut through retaining wires before transferring liquid ethanol to the mockup, which is about the size of a washing machine.

The CSA-NASA achievement is the first of its kind, and may help reduce the growing pile of dead satellites and space junk orbiting overhead. … Read more
