Meg Whitman: Traditional PCs drive growth, not just tablets

Hewlett-Packard executives had a lot of positive things to say about PCs in the company's earnings conference call on Thursday. And CEO Meg Whitman said she's seeing renewed interest in traditional PCs over tablets in business.

"There is some momentum in a long overdue PC refresh. What I think commercial customers are understanding from their employees, while they may want a tablet, they actually also need more traditional compute devices to do their real work," Whitman said during the company's earnings conference call for the first quarter of 2014. In the quarter, HP delivered better than expected results. … Read more

Real or not, 'iPhone 6' photos are everywhere

Purported iPhone 6 photos have landed. But the usual caveats apply about fakes when the real iPhone 6 is likely still in the testing stage at Apple.

First the caveat. "It is entirely unclear whether the device in the images is a legitimate iPhone 6 prototype or whether it is a fake," according to MacRumors, which obtained the photos via an anonymous Twitter user. And indeed it may be a fake in the form of a render.

Other blogs that follow Apple quickly posted the photos too.

Some of this was driven by Sonny Dickson, known for photos … Read more

ZTE Boost Max is a 5.7-inch phablet for cost-cutters

When Boost Mobile decided to rebrand ZTE's Iconic Phablet as the Boost Max, the carrier wanted to go big -- 5.7 inches big, in fact.

But even though it's touted as Boost's first phablet and has a large touch screen, the Max isn't very "max" at all. Especially when you consider it has just a 720p display, a dual-core processor, and an average-quality 8-megapixel camera.

At $299.99 prepaid though, the device is indeed a bargain. Taking into account other handsets of similar size, it's one of the least expensive supersize phones … Read more

Galaxy Note 3 Neo packs 6 cores

We need cores -- lots of cores. Luckily, the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo has six of 'em.

The spin-off of the Note 3 phablet boasts a hexa-core processor. That's two 1.7GHz cores for hard work like graphically intensive gaming and four 1.3GHz cores for more menial everyday tasks. The six cores are backed up by 2GB of RAM. It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The Note 3 Neo boasts a 5.55-inch screen with a 1,280x720-pixel resolution. It's high definition, so movies will look crisp. But the 265 dot-per-inch pixel density is … Read more

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo spotted for preorder in Belgium?

The rumored Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo might soon be officially announced, if a recent leak is to be believed.

Samsung-tracking site Sammobile on Thursday said that it received a tip from a reader claiming that a Galaxy Note 3 Neo preorder page has been designed and will soon go up on a Belgian retailer Web site. According to the site, the preorder price is 599 euros ($818). The tipster didn't know, however, when the page might go live.

The Galaxy Note 3 Neo is expected to come with a 5.5-inch display and 8-megapixel camera. It's believed … Read more

Design of iPhone 6 'locked down,' claims analyst

A consensus of analyst speculation is building for an iPhone that's not quite 5 inches.

After a spate of recent speculation about Apple's next iPhone, Cowen and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri has chimed in, claiming an iPhone 6 with a 4.8 inch display is locked down, as reported by AppleInsider.

That will also include higher-speed 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.

Updates to iOS may center on changes to iBeacon, Touch ID, and Passbook, as Apple pushes further into mobile payments, Arcuri said.

The screen size jibes, more or less, with that in an earlier research note from NPD DisplaySearch. … Read more

Rumors are already starting to roll in about Apple's purported iPhone 6, according to Apple Insider. The newest claims come from Chinese analyst Sun Changxu, who told Chinese-language Web site QQ Tech that the smartphone will come in two large-screen sizes and could be unveiled as soon as June.

According to Changxu, the upcoming iPhone 6 will most likely have a 4.7-inch, 1,136-pixel-by-640 pixel display. Changxu said that Apple could release another smartphone shortly later that has a higher-resolution 5.7-inch display. Word has it that Apple will reveal its new smartphone at its Worldwide Developers Conference … Read more

All hail the phablet! Jumbo phones finally going mainstream

LAS VEGAS -- It seemed like only yesterday that we mocked the idea of holding up a 5-inch smartphone to your ear for a call.

Now, we're not even batting an eye at 6- and 7-inch displays on smartphones.

Such is the quick ascent of the "phablet," the official name for jumbo phones that lie between a traditional smartphone and the larger tablet. Phablets are no longer a niche product: Accenture found in a recent survey that more than half of people who were asked about their next smartphone said they would prefer the bigger phone.

ZTE's not-so-'Iconic Phablet' makes its CES 2014 debut (hands-on)

LAS VEGAS -- Go ahead, call 2014 the year of the phablet. ZTE is certainly continuing to experiment with screens spanning 5.5 inches or larger, launching the 5.7-inch ZTE Iconic Phablet at CES 2014.

Now, it may seem a little presumptuous to call your own phablet "iconic," especially when the handset in question is a midrange device like this. The Iconic certainly looks nice. In fact, it's one of the most premium-looking smartphones we've seen out of ZTE.

A solid slab of aluminum (yes, real aluminum) makes up most of the back panel, with … Read more
