Two new features make Paper a better sketch app for the iPad

I got started with Paper for the iPad about a year and a half ago, and this week the popular drawing and sketching app received an update for iOS 7 that includes two new features that provide finer, more creative controls.

First, the size of your brush or pen strokes are smaller when made inside the loupe. Pinch out to call up the loupe, which magnifies a portion of the page. Prior to this week's update, your pen strokes would be huge inside the loupe, which defeated much of its purpose. Now, the bigger you make the loupe, the … Read more

Facebook Paper users can now share stories with anyone

Facebook has tweaked its Paper app to encourage more sharing.

Released on Tuesday, version 1.0.2 of Facebook Paper now lets you share certain Facebook posts by e-mail, text message, or Facebook Message. Previously, the app restricted you to only sharing posts with your Facebook friends.

To share a particular post, tap on the arrow key at the bottom of the screen, and you'll see several different options for sharing. You can't share every post by e-mail or text message -- only ones that link to actual online articles.

The latest update also allows you to turn … Read more

PaperAct Scan review

PaperAct Scan lets you take photos of important documents, turn those photos into documents, store them, and share them as needed. No matter where you are, you can quickly make a copy of anything you need with this app, and you can include it in an e-mail, either as a link or as an attached PDF.

This interface of this app is a little confusing at first, and you do need to create a free account to use it. Once that's done, though, you can begin snapping pictures of your documents to save or send. When you take a … Read more

How to refresh your News Feed in Facebook Paper

For me, the main appeal of Facebook Paper is the way it presents my News Feed. One of the issues I've always had with it is the lack of pull-to-refresh to force my feed to reload.

As it turns out, the pull-to-refresh feature is present, but doesn't work when you pull down on your feed. You probably have already noticed that pulling down when viewing your feed will open the app's menu.

But if you pull to the right on the image at the top of your feed, upon release it will refresh your feed.

PaperScan review

PaperScan is an intuitive app that lets you use your iOS device's camera to create quality scans. If you're someone who always has little scraps of paper floating around (and getting lost), PaperScan is an excellent way to get organized and reduce clutter.

PaperScan opens with a tutorial that walks you through each of its steps, but even without this the app would be easy to figure out. Just aim your device at the document you want to capture, take the photo, and PaperScan will automatically crop the image, removing the background entirely, and save it as a … Read more

Five tips to help you get started with Facebook's Paper app

Last week Facebook announced a new app called Paper. The app is designed to help users discover news through what it's calling "Sections." Sections contain articles posted by your friends or surfaced through Facebook's algorithms.

As of today, Facebook has made Paper available for iPhone users through the App Store. For now, the app is US only.

The first time you launch the app a video will walk you through some of the basics of Paper. After the initial tutorial, when you navigate to a screen for the first time, the same voice and overlays found … Read more
