Microsoft ending support for Office for Mac 2008

Microsoft announced today that it will end support for Office 2008 for Mac on April 9.

Office for OS X has been a staple in integrating OS X systems with many work environments that rely on Microsoft's popular office productivity suite. With its Mac Business Unit, Microsoft has maintained a dedicated development team for its Mac software which has spearheaded development of Office 2004, 2008, and the latest 2011 and 365 offerings.

Chrome and Office updates address vulnerabilities

Yesterday Microsoft released updates for Office 2008 and Office 2011 for OS X, which include patches for a couple of vulnerabilities in PowerPoint and Word.

In the security bulletin accompanying the Office 2011 update, Microsoft warned that the vulnerabilities include exploits in which an attacker can use specially crafted Word files to gain access to the system. Microsoft has released updates for Office 2011 and Office 2008, both of which are the only Office suites that will run in OS X Lion since they contain code for Intel chips. The update addresses critical security flaws in the program that could allow an attacker to execute malicious code on a system, and also provides a number of fixes and improvements to the programs, including the following:

Office updates address compatibility and security issues

Microsoft recently issued updates for Office versions 2004, 2008, and 2011, which address security flaws that could leave your computer vulnerable to attacks. On Tuesday Microsoft issued a few updates for its Office 2008 and Office 2004 suites for OS X, fixing security vulnerabilities with the Word and Excel programs that could result in a remote attacker executing code on the system through maliciously crafted Word and Excel documents.

Mac Office gets service pack update

Microsoft is releasing the second service pack update to Office 2008 for Mac, the company said Monday.
