Facebook opens access to early builds of Messenger for Android

Facebook said Monday that it has created a Facebook Messenger for Android beta program, meaning the social network will give anyone who wants to help bug-test its messaging app early access to a prerelease version of Messenger.

The company has promised its Messenger testers multiple updates per week and access to experimental features. Facebook even hinted that its Messenger for Android guinea pigs might get to test new types of sharing, though the company left out specifics.

Windows Phone users can now download Facebook Messenger.

Already available for iOS and Android devices, the social network's dedicated chat app is now nestled in the Windows Phone Store.

A spinoff of the full Facebook mobile app, Facebook Messenger lets you chat with one or more of your friends, share your location, and perk up your chats with pictures and stickers.

BBM to land on Windows Phone this summer

BlackBerry Messenger will expand its reach in the coming months.

In a blog posted Monday, BBM product and marketing chief Jeff Gadway revealed that the Messenger app will debut for Windows Phone users sometime this summer. The app will also travel to the newly-announced Android-powered Nokia X platform, though Gadway didn't reveal an ETA for that rollout.

BBM already supports BlackBerry OS, iOS, and Android. Users had been asking BlackBerry to extend BBM to other mobile systems, such as Windows Phone, Gadway added.
