How to control your iPad's onscreen keyboard

Ever find your iPad's virtual keyboard stuck in the middle of the screen instead of at the bottom? If so, there's an easy way to coax it back to the bottom.

The iPad offers two positions for the onscreen keyboard -- docked and undocked. Docked mode places it at the bottom of the screen, while undocked mode shifts it up to the middle. Should you find the keyboard floating in undocked mode and you would prefer it docked, hold down the keyboard button, the same one you normally tap to turn off the keyboard.

Review: Merge PDFs quickly with PDFMerge

PDFMerge is the sort of tool we've come to expect from Free PDF Solutions; a streamlined application that essentially makes it as easy as possible to do one job. In the case of PDFMerge, it's merging multiple PDFs into single documents. PDFMerge is based on the PDFSharp library. In addition to being free, PDFMerge's advantages are its small size (572.27KB) and speed. The latest version of PDFMerge, v1.19, has a new user interface. It supports Windows 98 to 8; we ran it on Windows 7.

Optional downloads are as common with freeware as commercials with … Read more

Review: PDF Merge quickly combines multiple PDFs into one document

With its rather basic but intuitive drag-and-drop interface, PDF Merge for Mac successfully combines several PDFs into one file. The program performs only one task, but does it quickly and without any problems.

The free trial version's basic menu lacks any advanced graphics or a user tutorial. Fortunately, the design is intuitive and well thought out. The trial limits the number of PDFs combined to three, but the full version of PDF Merge for Mac with no limits can be purchased for $18.99. A medium-size window has one area where files can be dragged and dropped. Users can … Read more

Review: PDF Split and Merge alters PDFs quickly

For those users who have the patience to figure out a complicated interface, PDF Split and Merge for Mac offers a number of useful features for altering PDF files. This free application had an unfortunately complicated download process that required navigating several menus on the developer's Web site.

The most notable thing about PDF Split and Merge's interface is how confusing it is. There are almost no graphics and the numerous features are not clearly labeled. A left-hand menu lists the main functions as plug-ins rather than specific options. These include the ability to alternate mixes of files, … Read more

With a super-easy, three-step process, Merge+ makes it easy to merge and update redundant contacts across multiple apps, accounts, and archives. Merge+ is compatible with Android 2.3.3 and above; we tried it … Read more

Google+ gives users a tool to merge multiple accounts

Google has come up with a way to merge users' Google Plus accounts, so that all circles and circle information can now be in just one account. The Web giant announced today the launch of the "Google+ circles transfer tool" via Google Takeout.

The tool works by moving users' Google+ circles and connections from what it calls a "source" account to a "destination" account. Once users' accounts are merged with this tool, people in their circles will only see the "destination" profiles.

This is most likely welcome news to those users that … Read more

Split and merge PDFs with 7-PDF Split and Merge Portable

Plenty of people don't want or need a big PDF app just to do something fairly simple, such as split or merge a handful of PDFs. Those people have many choices. For example, there's 7-PDF Split and Merge, a freeware version of the German software developer's premium tool. It has all the features of the Pro tool, but it will split only the first 50 pages and merge only five PDFs. We tried a fully portable version of the software, 7-PDF Split and Merge Portable.

As with similar tools, Split and Merge has a compact, all-in-one style … Read more

Apple to let multiple Apple IDs merge, report says

As the chorus of complaints grows over Apple's unwillingness to merge Apple IDs, it appears the company might soon change its stance on the matter.

According to MacRumors, two of its readers have contacted Apple CEO Tim Cook to see if Apple will eventually allow users to merge their Apple IDs. Those readers, MacRumors says, received word from an Apple executive relations employee, who said that the company is planning to allow for that functionality.

Apple has long denied customer calls for merging IDs. However, with the launch earlier this year of automatic downloads, complaints about that policy started … Read more

Folder combining in Lion appears to be buggy

One of the more than 250 new features in Lion is an enhancement to the Finder that supposedly allows you to combine the contents of folders. In Snow Leopard and prior versions of the Mac OS X, if you placed a folder into a directory alongside another folder of the same name, then the system required you to either cancel the operation and change the folder name or replace the existing folder. Now Lion should offer an option to combine the contents of similarly named folders; however, depending on the way you perform this task the process may not always … Read more
