Why 4.7 inches is the perfect screen size for the next iPhone

Whenever we do a poll about what new features people would like to see most in a new iPhone, the No. 1 vote getter always seems to be "bigger screen" followed by "better battery life."

With the iPhone 5, the iPhone's screen did get bigger -- or at least longer -- but it's still not big enough for some folks, who are drawn to the more-spacious displays found on competing Android models, led by the Samsung Galaxy S4, which sports a 5-inch screen, compared with the iPhone 5's 4-inch screen.

The question, of … Read more

Facebook doubles down on size of news feed photos

Facebook's news feed may have seemed a little different today...that's because it is. The social network has begun to brandish its new feed with larger photos.

"Starting today, we're rolling out an improved design for posts in news feed on the Web," a Facebook spokesperson told CNET. "Photos are up to two times larger and when a friend adds photos to an album, you'll be able to enjoy more of those photos directly from your feed."

Besides enlarging all photos, the new display also changes how albums are seen. Now, it … Read more

Are these iPhone 5 engineering drawings?

The site iDealsChina is at it again, posting what it claims are CAD renderings of the next-generation iPhone, which many presume will be called the iPhone 5.

The site says the "mold engineering" drawings were created to help guide accessory manufacturers in the production of their protective cases. Some similar drawings leaked in advance of the iPad 2 launch and an iPad 2 mockup that was spotted at CES in January ended up looking very similar to the actual iPad 2, which went on sale today.

If the purported renderings are to be believed, the next iPhone will … Read more

More rumors of larger iPhone 5 screen

Here we go again with the rumors that the iPhone 5--or whatever Apple chooses to call its fifth-generation iPhone--will have a larger screen. This one comes out of China, where iDealsChina has posted what it claims is a photo of the front bezel or digitizer panel for the iPhone 5.

Here's the long caption that was posted along with the image, which was first noticed by 9to5Mac:

Rumor: Japan to get DSi with even larger screens

GameSpot on Monday published a report from the Japan-based Nikkei news service saying that a new Nintendo DSi with two larger screens is slated to hit the market as early as this year.

Supposedly, the bump would increase the dual screens' size from 3.25 inches to 4.3 inches. While that sounds like a huge upgrade, there are a few reasons we're just not ready to believe this yet.

First of all, this new redesign would force the production of a brand new casing, something we're not sure Nintendo is ready to spend money on with the … Read more

LG won't produce larger OLED TVs until 2012

If you're following the fortunes of OLED, this little tidbit from LG CEO Kwon Young Soo that appeared on OLED-Display.net should be of interest.

"We plan to produce 32-inch OLED panels for TVs in 2012," he said, adding: "The commercial success of OLEDs hinges on how it shows its superiority compared to LCD technologies."

Both Samsung and Sony suggested they'd be selling a 32-inch OLED sets by the end of this year or by mid 2010 at the latest. And that may still happen, but the sets would be so prohibitively expensive that … Read more

Photos, details leaked on expected Kindle

Here's the latest on Amazon's new, larger Kindle, which is expected to be announced Wednesday morning at Pace University in Manhattan, according to numerous sources.

Thanks to an apparently surreptitious cameraphone photographer, Engadget has posted some blurry photos of what looks to be the dry run of tomorrow's presentation. They're not all that exciting--the new Kindle just looks like a jumbo Kindle 2. This Kindle may be called the Kindle DX, according to Engadget's anonymous source. The same source says it has a 9.7-inch screen (compared to the 6-inch screen on the Kindle 2). … Read more
