Samsung prices 2014 TVs at the high end, adds curved offerings

Today Samsung announced official pricing on its vast array of new 2014 TVs, including numerous curved and 4K/UHD sets first introduced at CES 2014 last January.

They ain't cheap.

Samsung's 4K models start at $2,499 for a 50-inch size. Compare that to Vizio, for example, which is charging $999 for its cheapest 4K 50-incher. On paper, the Vizio even has a picture quality advantage over the Samsung, offering full-array local dimming compared to Samsung's edge-lit variety.

Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 now on sale for $350

Oculus' vision of virtual-reality gaming took another step closer to reality on Wednesday with the public availability of its second Rift Developer's Kit (DK2).

Game makers can purchase the headset for $350 today from the Oculus Web site, with an expected ship date sometime in July.

Oculus said many of the headset's features are ready for the average gamer. These include "key technical breakthroughs" such as "low-persistence, high-definition display and precise, low-latency positional head tracking."

Sony kicks off Android 4.4 KitKat rollout across Xperia line

Sony has started rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat across its Xperia line.

The company on Wednesday announced that the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, and Xperia Z1 Compact are getting KitKat updates starting on Wednesday, though timing and availability vary by market and carrier. Sony said the KitKat upgrade includes the standard interface improvements baked into the mobile OS, along with the company's "tweaked" Status Bar and Quick Settings features. Republic Wireless rolling out KitKat for Moto X, reactivations for older devices

Big day for Republic Wireless. First, the company announced plans to offer the Moto G smartphone on its low-cost, no-contract service.

Google Glass updates slow down ahead of KitKat upgrade

Google took a break from its monthly update cycle for the Google Glass Explorer Edition, saying it's working on a bigger change to the 4.4 KitKat version of Android.

Google's Teresa Zazenski announced the change on the private forum for owners of the electronic eyewear, according to Glass Almanac. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 next up for KitKat upgrade at Sprint

Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 will soon be updated to Android 4.4 aka KitKat, Sprint has confirmed.

The carrier on Thursday published an update to its Galaxy Note 3 support page, saying that the KitKat rollout has commenced and that Galaxy Note 3 owners will soon see Google's latest mobile operating system on their handsets.

According to Sprint, the software updates could "take several days for delivery."
