Kik sticks a browser in its messaging app

Ontario-based Kik has built a browser into its popular app, setting out to prove that it can do more with mobile messaging than facilitate the exchange of emojis and stickers.

Wednesday, the 4-year-old company, which hit 100 million registered users in December, launched Kik Browser. The new release includes an URL and search bar that members can use to visit any Web site while inside the messaging app.

The company said the move makes its app the first smartphone messenger to come with a built-in browser.

With the browser addition, a person could, from within Kik, visit a site such … Read more

Kik rides teen interest to 100M users

The company behind the mobile messaging app Kik announced Thursday that it now has more than 100 million registered users, which is more than triple the number it had just one year ago. The app is signing on as many as 250,000 new people each day, CEO Ted Livingston told CNET.

Launched in 2010, Kik makes a messaging application for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone -- and BlackBerry unofficially. It was the BlackBerry app that initially helped Kik get off the ground in the early days. But after a legal tumble with BlackBerry, the Ontario-based company decided to focus exclusively … Read more

Messaging app Kik adds 200,000 users -- each day

They're simple, social, and entirely made for mobile, all of which might explain the explosive growth of standalone messaging apps even as Facebook offers a free way to chat on smartphones.

One of the biggies, Kik says that it now has more than 50 million users and that people -- mostly young people -- are signing up at a rate of 200,000 a day. That's twice the rate that Kik claimed when it last released stats. Just last November, the app claimed 30 million users and said that 100,000 people were signing up each day.

Kik Messenger is a popular cross-platform chat app. OK, so that describes a lot of tools. Messaging app Kik, now at 30M users, adds slick way to share

At a time when mobile instant messaging is available in so many ways -- standard SMS, for free via through Facebook Messenger and through Apple's iMessage for iOS users -- you might think that a free messaging app wouldn't stand a chance as a standalone business.

Ted Livingston, a 25-year-old mobile wunderkind based in Waterloo, Ontario, is out to prove doubters wrong.

His app, Kik, became a viral sensation when it launched in the fall of 2010 -- it added 2 million users in 22 days -- and now claims more than 30 million registered users. More impressive … Read more

Yeesh, Silicon Valley, another fine mess you've gotten us into

The uproar over apps that suck up people's address books without warning is hardly surprising--except perhaps to some of the software engineers working on such products.

Apple today finally said it would clamp down by enforcing personal-data guidelines already in place. Which, in turn, just illustrates the ongoing disconnect between tech companies and their customers when it comes to privacy concerns.

The engineers coming up with way to use your data or gather your location often do so with the belief that they're doing something helpful. As the founder of Kik, an instant messaging app that used to … Read more

Texting app banned by BlackBerry returns on own terms

Even the lawyers can't stop technology.

When a startup called Kik launched a mobile messaging app a year ago, the growth was explosive. More than 2 million people downloaded it in its first few weeks, turning Kik into a viral sensation on both the iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones.

Then the trouble began. First, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion pulled the Kik app from its app store. Then it filed suit against Kik Interactive in federal court in Canada, claiming misuse of trademarks and patent infringements. RIM makes the popular BlackBerry Messenger service, called BBM.

But while the legal process … Read more

GroupMe launches another update pre-SXSWi

Group messaging service GroupMe launched a big upgrade last week, timed to occur right before the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas, the biggest event of the year for digital start-ups looking to make it big. But that wasn't enough: GroupMe today launched what co-founders Steve Martocci and Jared Hecht call "version 2.1-more-thing" in a nod to the famed Steve Jobs line.

What's new this time? Instead of making groups invite-only, groups can now be "joinable" through solicitations on Facebook and Twitter. There are also some smaller tweaks, including avatars alongside … Read more
