Kenwood Cooking Chef now available in the U.S.

Way back in October 2009, I wrote about the Kenwood Cooking Chef. The device has finally made it to the U.S. What sort of gadget is this machine that has taken so long to grace our shores? Well, the answer appears to be more of what it isn't as opposed to what it is.

Combining a stand mixer with an induction plate, the multitasking appliance carves out a new niche on the countertop. By allowing chefs to cook directly in the work bowl, the Kenwood Cooking Chef offers a new way to operate in the kitchen.

Aha Radio partners with Honda and Subaru, streams tunes to the BRZ

LAS VEGAS--Remember when Aha Radio's claim to fame was robotic text-to-speech reading of Facebook status updates? You've come a long way, baby.

At the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, Aha by Harman announced a handful of new content and hardware partners, the ranks of which include Subaru, Honda, and Kenwood.

The two automotive partners, Subaru and Honda, will be building Aha Radio connectivity into their vehicle's infotainment systems for the 2013 model year--which means we should start seeing the fruits of this union as early as this fall. After pairing a smartphone running the Aha Radio app, drivers … Read more

Japan shows off world's largest glasses-free 3D display

Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications and JVC Kenwood recently demonstrated a 200-inch glasses-free 3D display that they touted as the world's largest auto-stereoscopic 3D screen.

Aside from the enormous size, the system offers a full-HD resolution with 57 effective viewing angles. … Read more

Kenwood gets into mech-free receiver game

LAS VEGAS--Yet another car audio manufacturer is testing out the CD-less lifestyle, as Kenwood announces its KIV-BT900 digital car audio receiver. Apparently, people don't just don't use discs anymore.

The KIV-BT900 drops its CD drive like a hot potato, instead focusing its attention on handling digital audio and video from USB-connected portable media players. Named among the supported devices are the iPod, iPhone, iPod Touch, and Zune. USB mass storage devices are also supported for a variety of audio (MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV), picture (JPEG and BMP), and video (MPEG4, WMV and H.264) formats.

Kenwood Cooking Chef stirs the pot

I've frequently expounded on the virtues of stand mixers: they have a wide assortment of attachments that are able to handle many kitchen chores. From pasta attachments to meat grinders, this one kitchen appliance churns through daily and not-so-daily tasks. However, for all the convenience these devices offer, there is one feature that I have not come across: the ability to actually cook a meal. Until now.

Combining food prep and induction cooking, the Kenwood Cooking Chef is a stand mixer like no other. The 1,500-watt mixer works in tandem with the 1,100-watt induction burner, allowing for … Read more

Kenwood steamer goes electric

Eating healthier is at the top of many consumers' priority list, and in order to do it, they're sacrificing cooking methods that rob foods of their nutritional value. As a result, focus is shifting away from breaded, battered, and deep-fried foods and toward healthier grilled and steamed ones.

Steaming meats and veggies can be accomplished in many different types of vessels, but all require a fixture that suspends the food in a basket above a bath of boiling water. Most configurations offer enough space for a single layer of food and are designed for use on the stovetop. This … Read more

Tech makeover for the Tesla Roadster

We just completed one of the most interesting installations that we've done in awhile. The owner of this brand-new Tesla roadster is a client of the Al & Ed's Autosound location in West Hollywood. The vehicle was in serious need of some mobile audio goodies, and also an update to the interior and some of the trim. The store has done a number of his vehicles over the years, and when he showed up in this all-electric roadster, nobody knew that there were some challenges ahead.

The Tesla is an all-electric roadster capable of 0-to-60 mph times in … Read more

Upgrade a Car: Unlocked potential

Every once in a while, we get a vehicle in the Car Tech garage that presents great potential, but poor execution. This was the case with the 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5GT that we took for a spin awhile back.

With DNA that includes traces of WRX and STI and a stout, turbocharged heart, we were quite disappointed with the 2.5GT's performance. We didn't get much relief in the cabin when faced with an extremely limited list of cabin tech options.

Once again, we're unable to leave well enough alone as we set about to right … Read more
