iOS 7.1 jailbroken but only on the iPhone 4

An enterprising hacker has jailbroken iOS 7.1, at least as seen on a YouTube video.

Posted by self-dubbed "insane programmer" winocm, the silent video shows a jailbroken iPhone 4 powering up in untethered mode. Winocm takes the phone from screen to screen and makes sure to hit the Settings screen to show that the phone is indeed running iOS 7.1.

So does this mean all iOS users running 7.1 can now jailbreak their devices? Apparently not.

A comment to the video from an account called "All things jailbreak" says the jailbreak works only … Read more

Apple credits jailbreakers for iOS 7.1 security fixes

Apple may view iOS jailbreakers as a thorn in its side. But the company credits some of those same people for finding certain security holes now fixed in iOS 7.1.

In a page describing the security issues corrected in Monday's iOS 7.1, Apple gave the nod to evad3rs, the team responsible for the popular Evasi0n jailbreak. Specifically, the evad3rs were behind the discovery of four different security holes.

But jailbreakers aren't the only ones having all the fun. Several separate researchers and other individuals were also credited for digging into iOS to uncover security flaws.

How to jailbreak your iOS 7 device

The evasi0n team is back with a jailbreak tool for iOS 7 devices. As you may recall, last year the same team released a tool for iOS 6 devices and it was extremely easy to use. That same tool has been repurposed and adapted to jailbreak iOS 7 devices.

Specifically, you'll need to be running iOS 7.0 up to 7.0.4 in order for the tool to work.

The process is nearly identical to the previous tool, requiring you to download and run the evasi0n app on your computer with your iOS device connected. This time, only … Read more

Untethered jailbreak released for iOS 7

For many iOS 7 users, one of the things missing from the mobile operating system since its release three months has been the ability to jailbreak devices -- until now.

The Evasi0n team announced Sunday morning it had released an untethered jailbreak for devices running iOS 7.0 through 7.0.4. The security bypass gives iPhone, iPod, and iPad owners deeper access to the software on their devices than Apple allows. … Read more

How to easily root an Android device

Rooting is the Android equivalent of jailbreaking, a means of unlocking the operating system so you can install unapproved (by Google) apps, update the OS, replace the firmware, overclock (or underclock) the processor, customize just about anything, and so on.

Of course, for the average user, rooting sounds like -- and can be -- a scary process. After all, "rooting" around in your smartphone's core software might seem like a recipe for disaster. One wrong move and you could end up with bricked handset.

Thankfully, there's a new Windows utility that makes rooting a one-click affair: … Read more

Non-Apple app store Cydia shown on iOS 7, with caveats

Popular third-party app installer Cydia, which predated Apple's own App Store, has been successfully installed on the latest version of iOS 7.

Redmond Pie shares screenshots of the software, which lets users download and install third-party software on their iOS devices without going through Apple's App Store, running on an iPhone 4 on iOS 7.0.2.

Now here's an important detail: So far it's only working on the iPhone 4, and using a version of the jailbreaking software aimed at Apple's older A4 chips -- not Apple's newest devices, which have proven to … Read more

iOS 6.1.4 gets jailbroken

iOS 6.1.4 has apparently been jailbroken just in advance of the expected announcement of iOS 7.

On Saturday, a developer dubbed Winocm tweeted an image of iOS 6.1.4 running Cydia, the popular app used to install software on jailbroken devices. The image shows Cydia version 1.1.8 installed on an iPhone 5.

But iOS users anxious to try out the jailbreak on their own iPhone may face a rough time. Unlike other jailbreaks that come as simple downloads, this one requires that you figure out how to tap into the iOS kernel yourself to use … Read more

Customize iOS app icons without jailbreaking

The ability to customize your iOS device beyond a wallpaper on the home and lock screens and icon arrangement doesn't truly exist. Unless, that is, you decide to jailbreak your iDevice. Jailbreaking a device gives you full permission to modify and install whatever you want on iOS, outside of Apple's walled garden. There are plenty of arguments for and against the act, but we'll leave that for another post.

For those who don't want to jailbreak, a new app called Iconical will allow you to create your own app icon for a long list of supported … Read more

iPhones can apparently be hacked with malicious charger

Most people have heard of malicious software as a way to hack into an iPhone, but what about a malicious charger?

Three researchers with the Georgia Institute of Technology say they have come up with a proof-of-concept malicious iPhone charger that lets them hack into the mobile device running the latest version of Apple's iOS in less than one minute. No jailbreaking required.

"Apple iOS devices are considered by many to be more secure than other mobile offerings. In evaluating this belief, we investigated the extent to which security threats were considered when performing everyday activities such as … Read more
