Power steering shifts to electric

If you buy a car today, it will likely have a major difference in the power steering than cars from 10 or even just 5 years ago: The steering system will rely on an electric motor instead of a hydraulic piston for power boost. The majority of new cars sold today use electric power steering.

I've seen -- and felt -- this change in cars ranging from Toyotas to Porsches over the years. My own car, a 1999 BMW, is firmly in the hydraulic boost camp. But I've grown to appreciate the precise response and linear boost in … Read more

Infinity AR: We'll fulfill sci-fi promise of augmented reality

Augmented reality has so far been mostly a sci-fi vision that overlays information from the virtual world atop what we see in the real world. An Israeli startup called Infinity Augmented Reality, though, wants to make a business of it.

In three to six months, Infinity AR plans to launch its app, called the Brain, for Google Glass; devices running Android, iOS, and Windows Phone; Microsoft Sync in cars; and perhaps most notably Meta's 3D augmented-reality glasses. The last example is closest to the science fiction vision of AR, where translucent information is merged with your full field of … Read more

Asus PadFone Infinity phone/tablet to land in the US

Asus has global ambitions for its PadFone.

A higher-end version of the PadFone Infinity is set to reach the US during the second quarter of 2014, CEO Jerry Shen told Engadget. Shen teased the device's US debut by saying Asus has a big operator lined up but didn't spill any specific names. And after the US, Europe is next on the agenda.

"Once this product is launched [in the US], we will definitely have no problem tackling Europe with the same product, because this US operator is very big." Shen said.

The model being prepped for … Read more

Review: Infinity Blade III combines beautiful graphics with fast-paced gameplay

Infinity Blade III for iOS builds on its prior success by delivering even better graphics while preserving the easy gameplay that was introduced with the original title. Like all games in the trilogy, this premium product features a world, larger than what has been introduced before -- this time eight times larger than Infinity Blade II.

After a lengthy installation, which requires at least 4GB of free space on the device, Infinity Blade III ends up taking 2.2GB. When launched for the first time, you are presented with a tutorial in case you're new to the game. During … Read more

Big Infiniti QX60 gets renamed, not redesigned

The 2014 QX70's engine room offers no surprises. The midsize crossover is powered by Nissan/Infiniti's 3.7-liter VQ-series V-6 engine; the same mill that makes an appearance in nearly every vehicle in the automaker's lineup smaller than the QX80.

The power plant makes 325 horsepower in this incarnation, sending its 267 pound-feet of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission on the way to the automaker's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. This rear-biased AWD system defaults to 100 percent rear-wheel drive, but can direct up to 50 percent of available torque on demand to the front wheels … Read more

Infiniti leaves well enough alone in the Q60

With its G- and M-series cars, Infiniti mixed performance with high-tech luxury, but then rested on its laurels for a good five years. I waited for the next innovative model update, but all Infiniti offered was rebranding, changing the model names of its entire lineup.

So the G37 coupe becomes the 2014 Infiniti Q60, and the old G37 sedan now sports a Q50 badge.

From my desk, it was a disappointing update. But when I got behind the wheel of the Q60, I was instantly reminded how good the old G37 coupe was. Besides the model name, there isn't … Read more

Cutting through the Bull: Infiniti

Infiniti is a brand that's really struggled to make an impact in the UK, even with the might of Nissan behind it. Which is a surprise, as on paper it seemingly has plenty to attract upmarket buyers. Take the FX for instance: it looks like a whole load of crazy, you can get it with a monstrous V-8 and it has Nissan bits in it, which means it won't go wrong. Premier League footballers step right this way.

Unfortunately for Infiniti, things haven't worked out as yet. Most people in the UK are oblivious to the name, … Read more
