Hyundai's newest R-Spec is also the cheapest Veloster Turbo

LOS ANGELES -- At the 2013 LA Auto Show, the Veloster Turbo becomes the latest model to wear Hyundai's "R-Spec" performance badge, joining the Genesis Coupe 2.0T and 3.8, and the Genesis sedan 5.0.

Aside from making the name slightly longer, R-Spec designation signals that the 2014 Hyundai Veloster Turbo gains a few go-faster tweaks, but loses a few premium features, offering enthusiasts and tuners boosted performance over the standard model, without the boosted price.

In the "upgrades" column, the Veloster Turbo R-Spec's handling has been improved with higher spring rates, … Read more

The mild and wild custom debuts of SEMA 2013

LAS VEGAS -- The SEMA Show is always a bit of a madhouse, and the 2013 SEMA Show was no exception. There are thousands of parts to customize with for as far as the eye can see. There are suppliers for custom headlamp LEDs, premium paints, vinyl wrap, and speakers and wheels bigger than what makes practical sense.

But what we're interested in are the custom cars that are built from these parts. The show is crammed with hundreds of cars, many of which are commissioned or showcased by the automakers themselves using blends of OEM accessories and third-party … Read more

The news-packed 2013 Frankfurt auto show has only just begun to cool and we're already starting to get previews of the upcoming 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas. Sweet.

Kicking off in November, SEMA is known as one of the (if not THE) largest aftermarket automotive shows and is home to some of the craziest customs that you'll ever hope to see. So, it's only fitting that the first preview to make its way to my inbox is a 1,000-horsepower Hyundai Genesis Coupe tuned by Bisimoto Engineering.

Hyundai delivers soft luxury in high-tech Equus

Enfolded in the 2014 Hyundai Equus' luxurious cabin, enjoying the soft air suspension ride and rolling down the freeway with the help of adaptive cruise control, I had a moment, a joyous upwelling I could feel in my chest brought on by the music pouring out of the car's stereo. It was the song "Lua," off the "Dark Was the Night" compilation, deep tones from an acoustic guitar opening the way for Gillian Welch's rich vocals.

I like this album for its variety, and play it a lot. But rarely do the tracks give … Read more

Suicide is funny, says Hyundai ad

Can you laugh about suicide?

Can you laugh about suicide while you're trying to sell someone a car?

It seems that someone at one of Hyundai's ad agencies felt that selling a healthy car merited flogging a dead man. Or, at least, a man who wanted to be dead by his own hand.

The perfect opportunity, the agency must have thought, came with the Hyundai iX35. It has 100 percent water emissions -- nothing noxious, you see. That's a killer feature.

So they made an ad in which a man tries to commit suicide in his garage … Read more

Motion-sensing, laser-laden sculpture is 'Fluidic' in the language of light

With a wave of your hand, bright lasers cascade across 12,000 translucent spheres that hang above a reflecting pool, creating a flickering, sinuous symphony of light. The ethereal experience isn't a dream, but rather Fluidic, a hybrid light show and sculpture that responds to viewers' movements.

Created by Berlin-based design studio Whitevoid Designs for Hyundai's Advanced Design Center, "Fluidic -- Sculpture in Motion" is just one of many interesting art exhibits on show during Italy's Milan Design Week, which runs through this weekend.… Read more
