Wifi Hacker 2013 Gold review

Despite its promising title, Wifi Hacker 2013 Gold doesn't actually hack Wi-Fi passwords; it only lists networks and generates random, occasionally funny passwords that you can use to trick your friends into thinking you're a hacker. This app is the ad-free version of software developed by Ape Widgets, who are notorious for their prankish apps.

Pros

Possibly amusing: Wifi Hacker 2013 Gold can invent passwords that may amuse your geeky friends, like 12345678 or mylittlepony, provided that you use it with a network whose true password none of your friends know.

Add-free: This version of the app offers … Read more

Ukrainian hackers claim takedown of NATO Web sites

Pro-Russian Ukrainian hackers claimed responsibility for a cyberattack that took down several NATO Web sites amid rising tensions over military incursions into the Crimean peninsula.

A hactivist group calling itself Cyber Berkut claimed to have launched attacks Saturday that took down NATO's main page and that of NATO's cyberdefense center. The group also claimed to have taken down the site for NATO's Parliamentary Assembly.

NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu confirmed on Twitter that several NATO sites had been the target of a "significant" distributed-denial-of-service attack but said the integrity of the systems was unaffected and experts … Read more

Really Francis? Here's where 'House of Cards' could use IT help

The second season of "House of Cards" starring Kevin Spacey as ruthless politician Francis Underwood arrived in one big batch of 13 episodes exactly two weeks ago, and we've all been binge-watching since. By the way, if you haven't yet made it all the way through season 2, this is about as far as you should read without risking spoilers. I'll say that again in all caps for you skim-readers out there -- SPOILER ALERT!!! That's better.

The web of intertwined intrigue and drama this season also introduced a new plotline in which fictional Washington Herald deputy editor Lucas Goodwin becomes ensnared in a plot to gain access to an AT&T server farm with the assistance of shadowy hacker Gavin Orsay. Goodwin believes Orsay is assisting him in tracking down evidence of Underwood's murderous habits. Unbeknownst to Goodwin, however, Orsay is a grudging informant for the FBI, which is entrapping Goodwin to send him off to prison and out of Underwood's hair.… Read more

Data breach at University of Maryland exposes 300K records

The sensitive personal information for more than 300,000 faculty, staff, and students at the University of Maryland were stolen in a "sophisticated" cyberattack on the school's recently bolstered security defenses, the school's president revealed late Wednesday.

The names, Social Security numbers, and birth dates of 309,079 individuals affiliated with school's College Park and Shady Grove campuses who were issued a university identification card since 1998 were exposed in Tuesday's attack, according to an apology issued Wednesday by university President Wallace Loh. However, no financial, academic, or contact information was compromised, Loh said. … Read more

Hackers hit Tesco as over 2,200 accounts compromised

Tesco, an international supermarket chain, has been forced to deactivate online customer accounts after hackers took aim at its systems.

The company confirmed to The Guardian on Friday that over 2,200 of its accounts were compromised. Interestingly, it's believed that the hackers didn't actually break into its systems, but instead used data collected from other hacks to see if they could get any hits. The affected accounts used the same username and password combination as those in previous hacks, allowing the hackers to break in.

Rather than snoop around, however, the hackers posted the compromised accounts online, … Read more

British spy unit reportedly hit Anonymous with DDoS attacks

A British spy unit turned a cyberattack method favored by Anonymous against it and other hacktivist groups, according to an NBC report based on documents Edward Snowden removed from the National Security Agency.

A division of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the UK's communications intelligence agency, used distributed-denial-of-service attacks to disrupt communications among members of Anonymous, according to the documents. DDoS is the same cyberattack technique used by the hacktivist group to mount online attacks targeting financial institutions, trade groups, and government entities after PayPal and banks refused to process payments for WikiLeaks.

Review: Protect your PC with ZoneAlarm Free Firewall

ZoneAlarm Free Firewall protects your Windows PC from intrusions and online threats. It's easy to use and works alongside your antivirus and other security tools, including many other firewalls. Its Auto-Learn feature conforms to your computer use. After you've allowed your frequently used apps, ZoneAlarm mostly works in the background, only appearing when something changes, like when you install a new program -- or some hacker tries to.

To install ZoneAlarm Free Firewall, you must opt for an IE toolbar and search provider (which keeps ZoneAlarm free of charge), though they uninstall with a click; or (like us) … Read more
