Read the news alongside your friends' social statuses

Paper, from the people at Facebook, lets you browse statuses and other news categories using a new, more visual interface than what you're used to with the official Facebook app. Mysteriously, the app is iPhone-only at the time of this writing, but it seems like it would be a great fit for iPad.

Taking a page from Flipboard, Facebook Paper delivers a tiled interface that shows your standard Facebook news feed, but also gives you curated news content organized by category. That combination makes Facebook Paper a distinct and more robust product that's meant to complement, rather than … Read more

Mugger offered flip phone, says 'no thanks'

Oh, it's funny now.

But how funny was it at the time, when Brooklyn resident Kevin Cook stared down the barrel of a mugger's gun?

As the New York Post reports it, Cook encountered a mugger in Central Park over the weekend. The mugger, who had an accomplice, was allegedly after Cook's phone.

"Once he saw my phone, he looked at it like, 'What the f-k is this?' and gave it back to me," Cook told the Post.

What was wrong with Cook's phone? Well, it's a 3-year-old Windows flip phone, perhaps not … Read more

Galaxy Note 3 can now rev up via $70 wireless-charging cover

Users of the Galaxy Note 3 can now protect and charge their phones courtesy of a new cover from Samsung.

Selling for $70, the Galaxy Note 3 Wireless Charging S-View Flip Cover encases your phone, aka phablet, in polyurethane leather. When the cover is open, you can access the entire touch screen. When the cover is closed, you can still see the date and time on the home screen and swipe your way to other screens and menus. Notifications and other alerts also pop up without you having to open the case.

Best of all, the case can help juice … Read more

Review: Get five free fonts with Handwritten Font 3 for FlipFont

Handwritten Font 3 FlipFont bundles five free fonts for your Android device. These fonts offer a stylish take on the handwritten style and give your phone or tablet a personal touch. The app is ad-supported and a bit intrusive in access, but the fonts are nicely rendered and, better yet, free.

Handwritten Font 3 will probably appear in your Apps Manager as Fuentes Manuscritas 3, though all the app's documentation and instructions were in the appropriate language (English, in our case). When you first run the app, its homepage lets you view previews, get more apps, or open the … Read more

New Samsung Android flip phone bubbles up with quad-core CPU

Samsung looks to be readying yet another quad-core beast of an Android, but with a more olde tyme shape: the humble flip phone.

The third Android-power flip phone to emerge (after the Galaxy Golden and Hennessy), this model was recently spotted online.

Known as the SM-W2014, it looks like it marries the flip phone design with a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Because who doesn't need that much horsepower in the traditional form factor?

This new bird seems to have other high end features as well, if this Tenaa listing page is true. The unnamed Samsung could have a … Read more

Leave Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones alone about his flip phone

Jerry Jones, billionaire owner of the Dallas Cowboys NFL team, has a flip phone.

This fact came to Twitter's attention thanks to a screenshot from Sunday's game posted by user Cork Gaines. It led to a considerable amount of mockery with people questioning why Jones doesn't use a few of his copious buckaroos to get an iPhone and hire someone to teach him how to use it.

Before we get too deep into this, I should confess I'm not a Cowboys fan. My two favorite teams are the Chicago Bears and whatever team happens to be playing the Cowboys. That's just the way my football fandom goes. Seeing evidence of Jones with a flip phone should have sent me into paroxysms of snarky joy.… Read more

Behold, the Samsung Galaxy Golden Android flip phone

Samsung must believe that good things come in pairs. Just a week after introducing the quad-core Samsung Hennessy flip phone for China, the electronics giant has announced a second dual-screen Android smartphone experience in the Samsung Galaxy Golden (translation).

The Galaxy Golden runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and features two 3.7-inch Super AMOLED touch screens mounted back-to-back. The unconventional form factor is a smartphone take on the familiar clamshell design still used in many basic flip phones today. The design lets you access the smartphone screen in both closed and open positions.

Although it bears the Galaxy name, … Read more

Rumor Has It: HTC One Max could be the phablet you didn't know you wanted

Smartphones all look kind of the same, don't they? Candy-bar designs with touch screens that are big, small, and everything in between seem to rule the market.

So it's nice to know that Samsung is still trying to shake things up, at least abroad. A new rumor popped up this week, alleging that Samsung is working on the Galaxy Folder, a flip-phone Android handset, possibly for the Chinese market.

Not to be outdone, HTC could be working on shaking things up, too. Reports of a new phablet, possibly called the HTC One Max, have been coming in fast and furiously lately, and I think this time, they're right on track. What do you think? Would you be into a phone with a 5.9-inch screen? Let me know in the comments.

Bonus clip: A dismembered thumb makes a cameo appearance.
