Flipboard buys Zite from CNN to quash a rival

Flipboard, the magazine-style news reading app, is buying competitor Zite from CNN, the companies announced Wednesday.

The deal includes an advertising partnership between CNN and Flipboard, which will phase out Zite as a standalone app while adding the Zite recommendation technology into the Flipboard app. The majority of the Zite team, sans CEO Mark Johnson, will join Flipboard.

Facebook serves up Paper, a Flipboard-like reader app

Facebook on Thursday unveiled Paper, a Flipboard-like reader app, as it continues to broaden its mobile offerings.

Paper is made up of stories and themed sections, tying together your News Feed with other themes and topics ranging from sports to food, with stories from publications. It will be available in the US on Feb. 3 for iPhone users.

Flipboard releases app for Windows 8.1

Flipboard is releasing a new app Thursday that will work on devices running Windows 8.1, including Microsoft's new Surface Pro 2.

The company designed the new app to take advantage of Windows 8's signature live tiles, and users can feature Flipboard as a live tile on their Windows Start screen. While the app appears to be aimed at tablet users, it will also work with Windows 8.1 desktops and laptops. The app is available for download at 4 p.m. PT, according to a Flipboard spokesperson.

Flipboard expands into mobile commerce with catalog feature

Flipboard, the social magazine app for iOS and Android, is extending its feelers further into mobile commerce with a new catalogs category. The update, released Monday, allows companies and individual users to create specialized buying guides out of items found within Flipboard and on the Web. The guides can then be deposited into custom magazines with price tags and product info alongside active links to allow purchases.

Flipboard, Instagram coming to Windows Phone (finally)

Tuesday at Nokia World, Nokia announced that a few of the most popular apps from iOS and Android -- Flipboard, Instagram, and Vine -- are at last coming to Windows Phone.

In total, Nokia showed off 23 new apps that are coming to Windows Phone. Those include photo social network Instagram, social news magazine app Flipboard, Twitter-owned video app Vine, and video editor Vyclone Pro. The Windows Phone app store will also get several new games, such as Temple Run 2, My Talking Tom, and FIFA 14.

Flipboard enables gifs, top stories for iOS devices

Flipboard's Apple device users now can be as animated as their Android counterparts. The news magazine app added gifs support with its latest iOS update, the company announced Wednesday.

The company added support for the animated files for Android users alongside the launch of its Web-based version last month.

Flipboard, the app that lets you tap and flip your way through digital magazines on smartphones and tablets, has come to laptops and desktops. You can now access your Flipboard account from a Web browser, complete with the flip animation -- for better or worse. You can also use the Web app to create your own magazines to clip articles for later viewing via a bookmarklet. But the magazines you create are kept separate from the rest of Flipboard on the Web, which makes the Web app a better addendum to the mobile app than standalone product.

A Web-based version of Flipboard goes live on Tuesday, bringing the flipping motion loved by millions of users to the desktop and beyond.
