Apache OpenOffice review

OpenOffice has come a long way after racing to improve its compatibility with Microsoft Office. If you're looking for Microsoft-caliber applications for free, OpenOffice has alternatives to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and more.

Pros

Free: The most significant feature of OpenOffice is that it's free -- no subscription fee, no lump sum, no upsell to a pro version. If your business needs don't include complex word-processing or database-management features, then OpenOffice is a bargain.

Compatibility: OpenOffice supports the same file formats as rival programs like Word and Excel. Those coming from Microsoft will be pleased to hear … Read more

Microsoft Excel for iPad review

Microsoft Excel for iPad brings the versatility and functionality of this powerful spreadsheet program to your iPad with an intuitive and attractive interface. Create, edit, and send all types of spreadsheets right from your iPad, and maintain proper formatting across all of your devices with this app.

Pros

Template options: Excel for iPad is a full-featured application, so it brings all of your favorite things about Excel along with it. One of the nicest of these, in our opinion, is the number of template options available. Whether you're putting together an annual financial report, a household budget, or a … Read more

Microsoft relaunches Office Web Apps as Office Online

The online version of Microsoft Office has a new name, along with some new features intended to streamline certain activities.

Why the name change? In a blog post on Wednesday, Office Online product marketing manager Amanda Lefebvre acknowledged that the name Office Web Apps confused users. Some apparently thought they had venture to an app store to find the software and then manually install it.

"No, to use them all you need is a web browser," Lefebvre said. "Ah! You say. So it's like Office, online. Yes, exactly. Office Online."

Beyond a new name, the … Read more

OneDrive replaces SkyDrive, and adds features in the offing

Microsoft OneDrive is a revamped version of the company's cloud storage service (formerly called SkyDrive) that lets you store files in the cloud outside of your computer or smartphone, so that they're accessible from any device connected to the Internet. With the news, the company also added some tweaks to its accompanying app for iOS.

OneDrive is just one of many cloud services available, such as Google Drive and Dropbox, but has the unique advantage of working flawlessly with Microsoft Office documents as long as you also own the Office app with a subscription to Office 365. Without … Read more

Microsoft's unXcellent math adventure in new Surface 2 ad

Doing great ads is hard.

In fact, I'd say it's harder than math.

With math, you have machines that can do it all for you. You just have to punch in the numbers, press enter, and the answer comes out.

Which is why it's a touch unfortunate that a new billboard for Microsoft's Surface 2 seems to have miscalculated, despite using Excel.

As Apple Insider reports, the ad shows a budget plan for a Hawaii vacation.

The numbers, as presented by Apple Insider, are these: AirFare, $2,500. Hotel, $4,000. Car, $500. Food, $1,500. … Read more

Microsoft builds multiauthor, live editing into Office Web apps

Microsoft has caught up to a key collaboration feature of Google Docs with its rival Office 365 service: the ability for multiple people to simultaneously edit the same document.

The feature now is available for the Web versions of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document.

"New real-time presence helps you see where your co-authors are working in the document so that you don't create conflicts as you edit," said Microsoft's Amanda Lefebvre in a blog post Wednesday. "Additionally, the new ability to see changes to text and formatting as they happen will help you and your … Read more

Review: Desk UnPDF Converter for Mac converts your PDF files into other formats

Desk UnPDF Converter for Mac is designed to solve the longstanding problem of editing PDF files in a native word processor. By stripping out PDF formatting and converting the text into RTF for Windows 97+ or Open Office, this app allows you to then open and edit those files more easily. While there are certainly some limitations in terms of the formatting, layout, and style of the finished document, it works well.

When you open UnPDF, you can start converting documents right away. Just load any PDF into the software and then select how you want it exported. You can … Read more
