Pitfall review

Pitfall challenges you to guide your runner through the jungle, all the while avoiding obstacles and collecting as much treasure as you can. You'll find the hours melting away as you lose yourself in this challenging and invigorating endless running game.

Variation: This game takes the basic endless running game and adds a few twists of its own. For instance, there are plenty of different obstacles to overcome and landscapes to run through. Plus, your perspective changes at different points, which adds an extra layer of challenge to the task of guiding your character safely.

Star Apps: Zynga's Jonathan Knight

Jonathan Knight is not a new kid on the block or a New Kid on the Block. Zynga's VP of games is a 20-year veteran of the games business, leading development of CastleVille (iOS, Android) and recent release FarmVille 2: Country Escape, available on iOS, Android, and (as of May 13) the Kindle Fire. Besides offering a fresh setting, FarmVille 2 enables gamers to play on the go, with or without a connection, socially or solo. I chatted with Knight about his career, his first gaming experience, the enduring appeal of farming games, and his favorite non-Zynga apps.

Easy controls, simple graphics, and excruciatingly difficult gameplay

Duet Game is one of those games that's so challenging that the frustration level is high, but when you finally succeed is that much more satisfying. Your goal is to maneuver two objects in sync past white blocks by rotating either clockwise or counterclockwise. On the surface, the concept is simple, but once you get into the game, the challenge is anything but.

Voted by The New Yorker as one of the most elegant iPhone games of 2013, Duet Game only reached into the top 100, then fell back into relative obscurity. But a recent price drop has sent … Read more

Review: Survive doomsday and race your way out of the zombie madness in Escape 2012

Escape 2012 is silly zombie fun in spite of its tough-to-master controls and mediocre layout. This game is exciting and easy enough to pick up and play that it will definitely entertain you for a little while. Don't expect much replay value once you've beaten the game, though.

Escape 2012 puts you behind the wheel of a small car as you try to drive to safety in a zombie apocalypse. That means dodging obstacles and other survivors as you grab oil cans and crash through zombies. The game ends when you reach 5000, which isn't too difficult … Read more

Review: Solve a mystery and escape from a creepy house with Can You Escape

Can You Escape packs colorful graphics and challenging gameplay into a mystery adventure game. While creepy settings and the occasional ghost make for an entertaining game, there are several aspects of the application that need attention.

Can You Escape installs two separate game icons on your home screen. The game also changes the home page of your Internet browser. In addition to these two annoyances, there are also pop-up notifications, which promote other applications from the developer, as well as pushed advertisements that often appear during the game, which are quite distracting. Upon startup, a small Flash animation displays a … Read more

Review: Escape to a tropical paradise with this nerve-soothing screensaver

Isotope 244's Tropical Island Escape 3D Screensaver brings all-too-realistic views of, well, paradise, and its soothing wave sounds make for an instant vacation that's worth taking at any time, but most especially on a cold, dark, dreary morning when the cubicle walls seem to be closing in. Tropical Island 3D Screensaver has three gorgeous views to choose from, as well as a jaunty Caribbean music track as an alternative to the beach track. You can set it to play one of your own tunes, too. This formerly for-pay screensaver is now freeware that works in Windows versions NT … Read more

Review: Zombie Escape - The Driving Dead is a fun take on the zombie genre

Zombie Escape - The Driving Dead attempts to inject something new into the increasingly stale zombie game genre, but it runs into numerous performance and design-related issues. The game, while interesting and at times quite fun, never plays smoothly; and because of strange decisions by the developers will almost certainly be a frustrating experience for most gamers in its free iteration.

The initial setup for Zombie Escape, after installation, is a frustrating process. It takes some time to navigate the menus, not all of the buttons work right away, and a lot of what you're trying to read or … Read more

In addition, you can also get AT&T DriveMode with the update. Designed to keep drivers from using their phones, the app sends out automatic text responses to incoming texts, e-mails, or calls when it senses that it's … Read more

Running is fun on the yellow brick road

Temple Run Oz (iOS | Android) is another movie-themed version of the mega-popular running game, but just like Temple Run Brave, the developers managed to add enough original content to make it worth your money.

In Temple Run Oz, you play as Oz while attempting to outrun the evil flying baboons from "Oz the Great and Powerful." Like Temple Run 2, you'll need to swipe to jump, turn, and slide under obstacles and you can tilt to move Oz from side to side on the path. But with this themed remake, the scenery has been completely redesigned to … Read more
