Valve's new Steam Machine controller keeps touch pads, adds face buttons (hands-on)

While the previous prototype for Valve's Steam Machine game controller looked functional enough, the lack of a traditional face button layout was troubling. With its latest iteration, Valve keeps the unique design of the haptic pads, while offering an immediately familiar button layout.

This new iteration gets both face buttons and Valve's version of a D-Pad. It's not really a D-Pad in the traditional sense, but more like four separate buttons for up, down, left, and right. I wouldn't exactly opt to play any fighting games with it.

The A, B, X, and Y buttons are … Read more

Valve shows off latest Steam Controller ahead of GDC

After showing off a rough design update to its Steam Controller at its annual Steam Dev Days conference back in January, Valve has decided, definitively it would appear, to strip the touch screen from the handheld and replace it with a logo-emblazoned home button alongside start and select buttons. And new to the latest prototype design is a protruding d-pad and X, Y, A, and B button layout similar to that of an Xbox controller.

The company showcased the changes on its blog Friday ahead of the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco next week, where Valve will be showing … Read more

Remotely control a Mac with Mac.remote for Android

Many of us rely on our computers as entertainment hubs for watching videos and listening to music. Having a remote control to manage simple functions like play/pause, fast-forward, and volume makes a lot of sense. Every now and then, you'll see a physical remote control included with a computer system, but they're pretty rare.

In the absence of an actual remote control, you can use an Android device with the Mac.remote app to control many multimedia applications on your Mac. You can even put your Mac to sleep, shut it down, and control the screen's … Read more

Does Google buying Green Throttle point to a set-top box?

Google's newest acquisition could point to the company adding snazzy gaming components to its rumored upcoming set-top box. The Web giant confirmed on Tuesday that it recently snapped up Green Throttle Games.

Green Throttle Games is known for its Bluetooth Atlas controller and Android Arena app that let users convert smartphones or tablets into makeshift consoles. In a cryptic message posted to its Web site in November, Green Throttle announced that its Arena app would no longer be available and all backend support for the app was ending.

"Stick around and we'll keep you posted on the … Read more

GE dishwashers gain a modular third rack

The plight of the kitchen utensil is well documented. That spatula or ladle is incredibly handy when you're cooking and serving, but when it's time to stick it in the dishwasher, things get a little bit murky. Cooking utensils tend to get scattered around my dishwasher like an afterthought, because, well, they are.

GE is hoping to change all that with today's announcement of two new dishwashers, the $1,599 Profile Series Stainless Steel Interior Dishwasher with Hidden Controls PDT760SSFSS and the $1,699 Cafe Series Stainless Interior Built-In Dishwasher with Hidden Controls CDT765SSFSS. Both are revamped … Read more

Pretend to be NASA at the Mission Control Desk

You don't have to work for NASA to have a cool desk loaded with buttons, switches, knobs, and flickering lights. To encourage his sons' love for space, Jeff Highsmith built them a one-of-a-kind Mission Control Desk.

"I researched the Apollo Program, as well as NASA's Mission Control Center, and designed my own console roughly based on those," Highsmith wrote in his tutorial. "I say 'roughly' because the actual Mission Control does more monitoring than controlling, and isn't awash in the whiz-bang rocket noises young kids appreciate. I took great liberties and made more of a 'space-themed' play console than an accurate simulator. My goal was simply to provide some extra ideas and sound effects for my two sons to play 'space' together."… Read more
