Fear inspired "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau to produce his latest film, "Chef," a smaller-budget affair than the usual Favreau fare. After working on three "Iron Man" films, "The Avengers," and "Cowboys and Aliens," he was nervous that he'd never make another "Swingers." His fear was unwarranted -- "Chef," out today, shows just how much he's matured artistically since the 1996 cult classic. "Chef" is a warm, well-written comedy starring Sofia Vergara, John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale, Oliver Platt, Scarlett Johansson, Dustin Hoffman, … Read more

LAS VEGAS -- To build a better fridge, Samsung decided to think like a chef.
The RH9900 4-door refrigerator, unveiled at CES this week, is the result of that effort. Along with the rest of the Chef Collection suite of kitchen appliances, the RH9900 was built based off of insights gleaned from Samsung's "Club Des Chefs" initiative -- sort of a culinary think tank. By working with master chefs, Samsung was able to study their cooking habits and design a more useful refrigerator for home cooking.
Aside from the nifty LED display that disappears into the stainless … Read more
Samsung debuted its new "Chef Collection" suite of kitchen appliances this week at CES, including the DW80H9970 dishwasher. With a sleek, stainless steel finish and reinvented washing mechanics, it's looking like a dishwasher worth keeping an eye on in 2014.
The Chef Collection dishwasher's marquee feature is "WaterWall," which Samsung is hailing as an entirely new approach to cleaning. Instead of a revolving circle of jets, WaterWall uses -- you guessed it -- a linear wall of water which sweeps back and forth during the wash cycle. Samsung calls this corner-to-corner cleaning, and claims … Read more

All cooking methods have some bit of mystery associated with them. Behind the closed doors of the microwave or wall oven, magic is happening. The same could be said for something simple like frying something on the stovetop. The transformative process that happens to our food when we apply heat may be understood on a primal level, but that doesn't necessarily translate to an innate understanding about how and why food cooks the way it does.
You are what you eat, and what you eat also happens to be fodder for a new iOS app called Countertop, which works in tandem with the Prep Pad smart scale. The kitchen helper is set to be released in November and is available for preorder now at $149.95. The kitchen scale and app, an offering by The Orange Chef Company (previously Chef Sleeve, makers of tablet-friendly kitchen accessories), are designed to be everyday accompaniments in the kitchen supplying nutritional data to users in a seamless environment.
The scale itself features a nice clean design that doesn't bog … Read more
Thanks to their small footprint and capacitive touch screens, tablets and the kitchen go together like peaches and herb. If, of course, you ignore the fact that water and electronic devices don't really get along. With its latest tablet, Archos plans to address this current issue, however. If only partially.
In June, the company will release the ChefPad, a $210 splash-proof tablet with a 9.7-inch screen and 1,024x768-pixel resolution.
The tablet will ship with an unskinned version of Android 4.1; it includes a 1.6GHz dual-core CPU (of currently unknown make and model), and features both … Read more
