Review: Keep your gadget running smoothly with an absurdly fast App Cache Cleaner

App Cache Cleaner gives you a strongly worded liability message that says it isn't responsible for anything it deletes. If that doesn't scare you off, the app quickly scans all of your files and tells you exactly how much space the cache is taking up. You can organize the list in ascending or descending order and exempt any application from the cleaning process. Once you hit "Clean," the app wipes your cache instantly. It didn't even take a second during testing, even when we used the app's handy one-touch widget. App Cache Cleaner takes … Read more

Google posts six tips and tricks for Google Maps on iOS, Android

After Google launched a completely redesigned Google Maps experience for iOS and Android users, our own Nicole Cozma covered five tips for Android (which applied to iOS as well) users to get started with Google Maps.

On Monday Google posted six tips of its own for Google Maps. Some of the tips covered overlap with our previous post, but there are some additional gems from Google.

One of them is the ability to zoom in and out on the map by double tapping the screen with a single finger, then sliding up or down to zoom in and out. This … Read more

Google sets Internet record with 25 percent of U.S. traffic

It's no surprise that Google is leaps and bounds ahead of other companies when it comes to search, but Google is even running the game when it comes to Internet traffic.

According to Internet monitoring firm Deepfield, the Web giant has set a new Internet record by running nearly 25 percent of North America's consumer Web traffic through its servers.

"Based on measurements of end device and user audience share, Google is now bigger than Facebook, Netflix and Twitter combined," Deepfield's Craig Labovitz wrote in a blog post. "An amazing 60 percent of all … Read more

How to cache offline maps in latest Google Maps for iOS

On Tuesday Google released an update to Google Maps for iOS, as promised. The update's most notable new feature is the addition of Google Maps for iPad.

One other feature added to the app that isn't completely obvious is the ability to cache a portion of a map for offline use. The process is identical to the Android version, requiring users to type a key phrase in the search bar.

The phrase? "OK, Maps." Perhaps the Maps team was a bit envious of the Glass team garnering attention for a similar phrase, or it's the … Read more

Chrome caching to smooth out rough patches in network

Google is working on software that will improve Chrome (Windows, Mac) during moments when people lose their network connection by letting the browser load its own stored copy of previously visited Web pages.

Google programmer Randy Smith said yesterday he's added support for "offline cache mode" to Chrome. It's only on the developer version of the browser so far, and it's disabled by default, but the flag to enable it says the feature will let Chrome load Web pages from the browser's local cache if the online version isn't available. That could help … Read more

Enable offline cached pages in Google Canary

Canary is a developer and beta version of Google Chrome's newest features. By allowing both versions of Chrome to run side-by-side, you can test out the newest features without sacrificing your stable version.

If you're using the most recent version of Canary, there's a new experimental feature that lets you view the offline cached versions of Web pages. Not sure if you have the most recent build? Easy fix. Just click the Settings icon in the top-right-hand corner, then choose About Google Chrome. Your browser will check for updates and apply any available.

So let's get … Read more

Quickly access Google cached pages in Chrome

Ever use Google to search for an answer and when you find it in the search results and click on the page, it's gone? How annoying. Another bothersome occurrence appears when a Web page layout has changed, and the information you usually find in a certain place is now moved somewhere else. For times like this, Google's page cache is amazingly useful. The results are not 100 percent guaranteed to show you exactly what you're looking for, but hey, there's not a whole lot of 100 percent anythings left in the world.

Before Google went through … Read more
