Hamilton Beach Java Blend Coffee Brewer sums blender and brewer

A fine dance gets orchestrated by baristas every day. It even has a musical accompaniment in the form of grinders grinding and blenders blending. These are the industrial sounds that fuel our modern civilization. Without sounds such as these driving us forward, there is a good chance nobody would get out of bed. The lure of coffee, however, is too strong to ignore and we march collectively forward, eager to face the day, blended coffee drink in hand. And now, that elegant daily ritual can live right on the kitchen counter.

Get a jump on the day with the Hamilton Beach 40918 Java Blend Coffee Brewer ($79.99).Read more

Hamilton Beach puts a spin on the French press

Technology has had a major impact on the goings-on in the kitchen. However, there are still some things that are hard to improve upon (at least from a preparation perspective). Take French press coffee for example. The simple preparation of steeping ground coffee in hot water produces results that are well respected for a reason: it just works.

Now, that's not to say an automatic plunger and integrated timer that tweets wouldn't improve the device, but for the most part, French press coffee makers are manual creations that do a really good job at what they do. But … Read more

These five slow cookers have ambitions for your kitchen

Reviewing slow cookers almost seems unnecessary. The core function of the category is so simple, and the fundamentals have changed so little over the electrified version's 80-ish years of existence, we didn't expect to see much differentiation between products.

It's for that reason that we stuck with the higher-end models in this roundup. We saw some variation in cooking performance between models, at least between the ceramic-crock and the metal-crock-based units, but the real differences came down to peripheral features, design, and usability. How many cooking modes do you get, how well do they work, are they … Read more

This Breville slow cooker cooks a bit too fast

The attractive $129.99 Breville Slow Cooker with EasySear gives a good first impression, but it falls short on features. It's completely missing a timer and a warm mode -- two crucial slow cooker options. It also cooks hotter and faster than the other models we tested, so following recipe-prescribed cooking times is futile. Skip this Breville slow cooker and get the $199.80 Ninja Cooking System if you want something high-end. And if you're looking for a more traditional slow cooker, the $59.99 Crock-Pot Cook & Carry Digital Slow Cooker and the $59.99 Hamilton Beach Set 'n Forget 6 Qt. A classic slow cooker with a few welcome extras

The $59.99 Hamilton Beach Set 'n Forget 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker is a very straightforward slow cooker. It isn't full of innovative tech, and it doesn't appeal to modern design sensibilities, but this is one of those rare times when I don't think that's a terribly bad thing. It offers the basics and a handful of special features, like a thermometer probe for cooking to temperature and lid clips for safe and easy transport. I strongly recommend this slow cooker to anyone looking for a uncomplicated, traditional approach to cooking slowly.

From smoothies to pesto: Seven blenders reviewed

Blenders are fun, but buying the wrong one is anything but. With countless models available at a wide range of price points, it can be hard to tell the upgrades from the downgrades. Are more watts always better? How much does the shape of the jar matter? Could a top-of-the-line blender be the smartest upgrade you'll ever make? The dumbest?

If your head spins just thinking about it, don't worry -- our handy blender roundup will help you find the perfect machine for your needs, whether you're looking to spend $50 or $500.

Stick to the basics with this budget blender

When you picture a blender, you probably imagine something that looks a lot like this:

That's the $39 Hamilton Beach Smoothie Smart Blender -- and it's an excellent option for all of your basic blending needs. More and more often, though, all kinds of fancy-pants blenders that boast ginormous capacities, powerful motors that sound like helicopters in flight, and special features like touch screens and single-serving attachments are popping up in stores.

So we tested this $39 model against the $149 KitchenAid 5-Speed Diamond Blender, the $199 Cuisinart PowerEdge 1000 Watt Blender, the $199 Breville Hemisphere Control Blender, … Read more

Behind the scenes with the Goodyear blimp crew

AKRON, Ohio -- Looking down at his landing pad several miles ahead and a thousand feet below, James Kosmos can't tell which direction the windsock is pointing, so he can't tell which way the wind is blowing.

But no matter: 14 people have arranged themselves in a horseshoe pattern on the landing pad, expressly to let him know which way he should come in.

Kosmos is a Goodyear blimp pilot, and I'm sitting right next to him in the cockpit of the Spirit of Goodyear, one of the tire company's three airships. We're just about … Read more
