Star Apps: Richard Reed Parry

When Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry produced his solo album of classical compositions, "Music for Heart and Breath," he made it as much for himself as he did for fans. "For me it has a centering quality and brings me in touch with some quality of quiet inner voice and inner rhythm that perhaps gets lost in one's daily life," he says. Parry is currently touring the album. I chatted with Richard Reed Parry about making the album, the challenges of working solo, his stage show, and his favorite apps.

Bitcoin-operated arcade machine is a game changer

There's something satisfying about the sound of a quarter rolling into an arcade game and plinking down with its brethren somewhere out of view. You won't get that noise if you try out Liberty Games' rigged-up Bitcoin arcade machine, but you will get to play your choice of Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, or any of dozens of other classic games.

Liberty Games took a Cosmic II full-size arcade multigame cabinet and modified it to accept Bitcoin payments. You scan a QR code on the machine with your smartphone and then pay up in exchange for game credits. Once paid, you're free to blast away at the old-school video-game baddies.… Read more

Great smartphone games to get ready for 'the big game'

The big game is this coming weekend, and most Americans will tell you it's a lot more than just a football game. Many people make an event out of the game with parties, barbecues, and betting pools, even if their favorite team isn't in the running. My team lost a week ago, but you can bet I'll be watching just for the fanfare. Even the commercials shown during the game are an event in themselves with advertisers spending huge amounts of money for 30 second and one minute spots.

While you wait for next Sunday's festivities … Read more

Get some big air on your way to the finish line

Asphalt 8: Airborne (iOS|Android) is the latest sequel in Gameloft's superpopular arcade racing franchise, but this one has a new element that lets you get big air to perform tricks. The new jumping mechanic is fairly well executed and adds to the excitement, but it becomes old hat pretty quickly.

It's important to note that arcade racers like this one differ from simulations like the Real Racing franchise, so don't expect real-world physics and controls. This type of racer is meant to be much more fast-paced and entertaining than the sims, so racing purists might want … Read more

A Ride Into the Mountains looks like a old-school console game, but is much more

A Ride Into the Mountains (iOS|Android) uses simple graphics to create a stunningly artistic world where you play as a young boy battling demons with his trusty bow. The touch controls for firing your bow take some practice, but it's worth it to master your skills to watch the story unfold. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done.

The storyline for A Ride Into the Mountains is simple, but the presentation is what makes the game special. A family lives in the shadow of a mountain that houses a magical relic that protects the surrounding land. When an … Read more
