Dish-Disney deal changes future of online TV

CNET Update is hacking coffee machines:

In this episode of Update:

- Learn why Dish made a deal with Disney so its DVR won't auto-skip commercials on ABC shows for three days after airing. In the compromise, Disney scored the rights to stream Disney-owned networks online, including ESPN, and that could be a game changer in accessing TV on the Internet.

- You may need to hack the Keurig 2.0 machine if you want to use bargain-priced unlicensed single-serve coffee cups. Keurig is fighting copycat K-cups with high-tech machines.

Oscars to stream live Sunday, but only for some

If you live in one of a handful of US cities and already pay for live TV, congratulations -- this year's Academy Awards go to you. Or rather, your phone.

The presentation ceremony for the Oscars -- routinely the most-watched live awards telecast of the year -- will be streamed live over the Internet for the first time by broadcaster ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that runs the awards.

ABC, which is owned by Disney, was the first broadcast network to enable live streaming of its programming online, but it has fenced itRead more

'The Astronaut Wives Club' drama to land on ABC

Why should advertising executives and their wives have all the fun? While "Mad Men" tackles Madison Avenue, "The Astronaut Wives Club" will be dealing with pressures only NASA could sympathize with. ABC just ordered 10 episodes of the original drama TV series planned for summer release.

Based on the best-selling novel by Lily Koppel, "The Astronaut Wives Club," the TV series is set in 1969 and tells the real story of women who were married to the biggest legends of the space race, and how they coped with sudden fame. … Read more

Internet pay-TV is coming. Will you care?

To hear television companies describe it, no plot is more predictable than the arrival of a Web-based TV provider.

"Somebody's going to come over the top," said David Zaslav, the head of Discovery Channel- and TLC-parent Discovery Communications, using the phrase for delivery of TV over the Internet. He made the comments last month at a UBS investor conference, where the financial chief of Disney said its arrival was a certainty and the chief of MTV's and Nickelodeon's parent, Viacom, gave it "a very strong chance" of arriving in 2014.

Review: Kids ABC Alphabets helps your kids learn English through a matching game and poems

Kids ABC Alphabets is a good learning tool, but it suffers from occasional lag. That probably won't play well with the impatient young children who will be using it. It doesn't help matters that the game, itself, gets repetitive quickly, either.

Kids ABC Alphabets gives kids a list of letters in the alphabet to memorize so they can match it when spoken. The game gives each letter its own digital note card, which comes with a pronunciation of the letter, a picture of a word that starts with the letter, and a pronunciation of that word. When we … Read more

ABC, CBS expand TV apps to more Android devices

Public awareness of "TV Everywhere" may be pathetic, but CBS and Disney's ABC efforts at bringing their shows to on-the-go viewers are creeping out to more devices.

Friday, CBS said its app for on-demand viewing of full episodes is available for Android and Windows 8 users and would be coming to BlackBerry 10 before the end of the year. (Provided Blackberry sticks around that long.)

The app will include more programming, with every episode of CBS' prime-time series eight days after broadcast, as well as classic shows like "MacGyver," "Star Trek," and "… Read more

New York judge denies request to shut down Dish Hopper

A New York judge has decided not to issue a preliminary injunction against Dish's Hopper, allowing the ad-skipping digital video recording device to remain legal in the state.

The ruling, released Wednesday by US District Judge Laura Swain, denied ABC's request for the injunction, which would have put a temporary hold on the sale of the devices.

This is another win for Dish, which has been embroiled in multiple lawsuits with broadcast companies over its ad-skipping technology called AutoHop. In addition to ABC, CBS (the parent company of CNET), and other companies have filed separate suits against Dish … Read more

Review: Baby Learns ABCs HD teaches letter-learning on the iPad

Fairly simple, highly polished, and heavy on the cuteness factor, Baby Learns ABCs HD is perfect for children ages 1-3. Part of the Baby Bus suite, this app is a must-download for parents.

The app features two simple, interactive games for young children. The first is a driving game in which children must move a car to capture the letters that appear onscreen. The second is a sing-along of the ABCs. Both are very rudimentary, but production values are high, which helps to keep the attention of the child using the app, and the interaction level is perfectly matched to … Read more
