Xbox One Titanfall bundle drops to $449 at Walmart, Best Buy

One of the reasons Sony's PlayStation 4 game console has outsold the rival Xbox One in the early months of 2014 has been the $100 price difference -- $399 versus $499 -- between the two. In mid-March, Microsoft evened the score a bit, adding the exclusive game Titanfall to new consoles as a bundle. Assuming a $60 sold-separately price on the game, one could argue the base cost of the Xbox One was now just $440.

Now, a second wave of price cuts has come to the Xbox One. As noted by the New York Times, two major retailers, … Read more

Walmart: Amazon image recognition a 'shiny object'

Walmart says it doesn't need flashy tech like Amazon's augmented-reality search to make its customers happy -- it's got a mobile app that's digitally hooked to 4,000 physical stores scattered across America.

"We need to make sure we're not just going after the shiny object," Walmart Vice President of Mobile and Digital Wendy Bergh said when asked on Thursday about Amazon's recently added image-recognition search feature. The feature, which Amazon added to its main shopping app, lets users search for products by taking a photo of the item. It's a … Read more

With Walmart's help, HP tries a QVC-style live pitch

Hewlett-Packard's latest ploy to get consumers looking its way: Take over a Walmart.com product page with a home shopping network-like live video presentation of its Chromebook 14.

But HP is going beyond pale imitation; hosting the live-streaming demo is company pitch-woman Christine Kane, the prototypical home shopping network-style host with an equal mix of bubbly enthusiasm and keen product knowledge, and who happens to be a regular guest on QVC. She'll be touting the Chromebook 14 to anyone who happens on Walmart's site on Tuesday or Wednesday.

HP could use a little QVC magic. The company, … Read more

Black Friday: It's not just America

This week, America's retailers have put on their finest makeup and highest heels in order to make themselves supremely attractive.

My inbox has been full of enticements, all to celebrate the Feast of the Black Eye Friday.

One seductive missive caught my eye, though. It promised: "Black Friday, sólo 3 días con ofertas irrepetibles?."

Well, I suppose my name does look a little Spanish after a few sangrias.

The offers were, of course, very special. A Lenovo Intel Core i7, for example. A mere 579. A Bosch washing machine for just 289.

It was then that my brain intercepted my eyes and whispered: "Hey, those prices are in euros."… Read more
