Spreadsheets

Numbers gets more templates, better touch controls

Numbers has been redesigned to match the design scheme of iOS 7 and is useful for creating spreadsheets and organizing data while away from your desktop. It's not going to take the place of more robust spreadsheet apps like Microsoft Excel, but it's great for tinkering with your data on the go. On the iPhone the app works admirably, but the smaller screen size makes it a bit less easy to use than the iPad version.

Like the other new iWork apps that were released in October, Numbers was built from the ground up for both iOS and … Read more

Get Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) free

This is an update of a deal I wrote about a few months back -- for those who missed it the first time around!

Earlier this year I noted that Kingsoft Office Free 2013 might just be the best Microsoft Office alternative you can get, especially if you need only the core elements: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Kingsoft offers a Pro version, of course, one that includes more goodies. A one-year license normally sells for $29.95, but today only, BitsDuJour has Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) absolutely free.

Why bother with the Pro version when the free version … Read more

Between the Spreadsheets: How good are you in bed?

Chemistry, like lovemaking ability, cannot be quantified.

Which doesn't mean that someone won't try to do it, just for hits and giggles, you understand.

Please, then, lie back and herald the coming of Spreadsheets.

Sadly, this is not an iPhone app that measures your Excel-lence. Instead, it offers you "Data. In Bed."

Honestly, I have friends who already do this. One tells me that a lady friend told him inflagrante delicto: "The data you're sending me is that this isn't quite doing it for you."

Yes, of course, she worked in finance.… Read more

Back up new iOS contacts to Dropbox, Google Drive

If This Then That recently launched its iPhone app, bringing with it the ability to interact and use data from your iPhone with a myriad of services.

IFTTT for iPhone allows you to setup your iPhone's Contacts app as a channel. Once set up, you can then have the app perform various functions, all of which are triggered when you add a new contact to your device. One such function is to append your new contact's information to a plain text file on Dropbox, or as another row in a Google Drive spreadsheet. Currently there's no way … Read more

Getting started with Grid for iOS

Grid is a simple, intuitive app that can be used for any number of ways to organize your thoughts or life. According to The Verge, it was started by an ex-Excel developer at Microsoft, who struck out on this own to create a spreadsheet app for the many ways people used Excel beyond numbers and formulas. Grid is such a departure from Excel that it's hard to imagine its author was once coding for Microsoft's spreadsheet team.

Open Grid and you're presented with a blank grid, well, after initially launching the app and tapping your way through … Read more

A couple weeks back I suggested that Kingsoft Office Free 2013 might just be the best Microsoft Office alternative you can get, especially if you need only the core elements: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Kingsoft offers a Pro version, of course, one that includes more goodies. A one-year license normally sells for $29.95, but today only, Giveaway of the Day has Kingsoft Office Professional 2013 (Win) absolutely free.

Let me note right here that this version has just a few key benefits over its free counterpart: a Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) editor, support for macros in the … Read more

Kingsoft Office 2013: The best free Microsoft Office alternative?

For over a year now I've championed Kingsoft Office Free 2012 as one of the top Microsoft Office alternatives for Windows, and with good reason: It's one of the best-looking clones out there, with superb file-compatibility to boot.

Yesterday, Kingsoft unveiled Office Free 2013 (Windows). (Please see below before you install it.) I'll go out on a limb and say it's now the single best free replacement for Microsoft Office, for a couple of very good reasons.

In case you're unfamiliar with it, Kingsoft Office includes three modules: Writer, Spreadsheets, and Presentations. Needless to say, … Read more

New Chrome extension can open Office docs

Direct browser support for Microsoft Office documents is coming in fits and spurts to Chrome. Google's latest effort is a portly extension for Chrome beta.

If you're running Google Chrome Beta on Windows or Mac, you can now install the Chrome Office Viewer. It will allow you to open links to Office files directly in the browser, a feature that was first announced with the Chromebook Pixel.

However, you're limited right now to merely viewing the files. To edit, you'll have to upload the file to Google Drive, or open it in Microsoft Office or another … Read more

Free LibreOffice office suite beefs up with version 4.0

Fans of LibreOffice will discover a new and improved version with several features typically found only in Microsoft Office.
