Get 100GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage for free

I can't pass up an opportunity to make fun of Microsoft, so let's dive right in.

Bing Rewards: Microsoft's blatant way of bribing users to use Bing instead of Google.

OneDrive: Microsoft's admittedly decent cloud-storage service that used to be known as SkyDrive -- until a lawsuit forced Microsoft to change the name six years after it launched. (Face-palm.)

The standard OneDrive freebie account comes with 7GB of space, but for a limited time, you can get 100GB of OneDrive storage for one year when you "spend" 100 Bing Rewards points.

The idea, of … Read more

Updated on Wednesday, the newest version of HopTo directly supports OneDrive, though the app still refers … Read more

OneDrive replaces SkyDrive, and adds features in the offing

Microsoft OneDrive is a revamped version of the company's cloud storage service (formerly called SkyDrive) that lets you store files in the cloud outside of your computer or smartphone, so that they're accessible from any device connected to the Internet. With the news, the company also added some tweaks to its accompanying app for iOS.

OneDrive is just one of many cloud services available, such as Google Drive and Dropbox, but has the unique advantage of working flawlessly with Microsoft Office documents as long as you also own the Office app with a subscription to Office 365. Without … Read more

Microsoft to give 100GB free OneDrive storage to early birds

OneDrive users who sign in fast enough can score plenty of free storage for the next year.

Microsoft will dole out 100GB of extra space to the first 100,000 people who sign onto their OneDrive accounts once the new promotion gets off the ground sometime on Wednesday. The extra space comes on top of your existing OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) storage, but is good just for one year.

Angus Logan, the group product marketing manager for OneDrive, confirmed the promotion to CNET but didn't reveal a specific launch time. OneDrive users who want to vie for the free storage … Read more

Microsoft ditches SkyDrive for OneDrive after BSkyB dispute

Microsoft's SkyDrive won't be around much longer -- at least, not by that name.

SkyDrive, the software company's cloud-based storage service, will soon be called OneDrive, Microsoft General Manager for Consumer Apps and Services Ryan Gavin announced Monday.

The move comes several months after a British court ruled that Microsoft's use of the SkyDrive name was infringing on a trademark owned by British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) Group's Sky trademark. Rather than continue to battle it out in court, Microsoft decided it was time to change the service's name.

Gavin acknowledged that the BSkyB dispute … Read more

Microsoft ponders new names for SkyDrive

Microsoft is reportedly trying out potential new names for SkyDrive after losing a legal battle with Sky this past summer, with possible candidates rumored to include NewDrive, BingDrive, and FetchDrive.

Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claims the SkyDrive's new name is NewDrive. LiveSide has reported that the URL www.newdrive.com pointed to SkyDrive, but the link is now dead.

Before you get too excited, Microsoft has previously used "new" as a placeholder or internal code name: Hotmail was internally dubbed Newmail before it was publicly rechristened Outlook.com. Back in July a UK court ruled that the … Read more

How to automatically back up Instagram photos to SkyDrive

Backing up photos from your iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone is easier than ever and doesn't even require you to use a computer. Services like Dropbox and SkyDrive can automatically back up your photos so you can access them from practically any device.

Instagram photos, however, aren't typically included in the automated backups. After carefully cropping your image and selecting the perfect filter, you might like to keep a backup of it as well. Here's how to automatically back up your Instagram photos to SkyDrive using an IFTTT recipe:
