Red light cameras outside ER make some sick

For some government administrators, the tension between safety and money must cause headaches.

Many justify the need for red light cameras by claiming lives are saved. But then others notice there are profits being made, which tends to raise their bile.

One Florida city, though, may have gone too far.

As Florida Watchdog reports, wise officials has installed red light cameras perilously close to the emergency room at the University Hospital in Tamarac, Fla.

You might conceive that there would be genuine need for some people to run these lights. Ambulance drivers, for example. Or people who have, you know, … Read more

Red's camera wows with top score in image-sensor test

When it comes to image sensor quality, a camera company you probably haven't heard of just stole the show -- almost.

Nikon's D800E is the top dog on the DxOMark sensor test rankings, with a score of 96 on precise measurements of dynamic range, noise, and low-light performance. It's not often that a new winner emerges, but a cinema camera from a company called Red -- the Epic-M camera with the Dragon sensor -- just earned a score of 101.

The impressive score isn't quite enough to win the competition, though: DxO Labs measured the performance … Read more

What if Red Bull's season didn't improve?

As Britain's greatest bard put it; "Now entertain conjecture of a time".

Pre-season testing has not gone well for the Red Bull F1 team. They've started on the back foot (or perhaps hoof in the case of Red Bull, and err, also Ferrari for that matter). The Renault power unit has proved troublesome, and Adrian Newey's tight packaging has simply exacerbated those problems. From this moment on, they are playing catch-up, and, as they say in Formula One "If you are not going forwards then you are.. just plain f*#3d".

AMD's first ARM processor is 8-core and 64-bit

Advanced Micro Devices is trying to make an impression with its first ARM processor.

And it may succeed. The AMD Opteron A1100 series -- targeted at servers -- can integrate 8 processor cores and will be one of the first ARM chips to be 64-bit.

AMD is tapping the Cortex-A57 processor design, the "highest performing processor," according to ARM.

Sample shipments of the silicon will begin this quarter along with a development platform, AMD said Tuesday.

The chip supplier is highlighting the 64-bit aspect of the processor.

"AMD is collaborating with industry leaders to enable a...64-bit … Read more

Mars Curiosity rover transforms into an official Lego model

The world oohed and ahhed as NASA's Mars rover hurtled through the Red Planet's atmosphere, surviving "seven minutes of terror" and safely touching down on the barren landscape last year. Now, people can replay the death-defying feat with Legos.

The Danish toy company announced Thursday that on January 1 it will debut a new Lego set based on the Mars rover named Curiosity.

Just like the real spacecraft, the 1:20 scale Lego set comes with a 6-wheel rocker-bogie suspension, articulated robotic arm, and multiple camera sets. It also comes with a display plate and Lego … Read more

Six apps that make holiday shopping a snap

CNET Update is on the hunt:

Don't get bogged down by the dozens of junk coupon apps that are hard to navigate with ads too small to read. As a deal huntress, I can vouch for a few that actually help manage the mall madness:

A barcode-scanning app is essential to making sure you're getting the best deal. I like RedLaser (owned by Ebay), and ShopSavvy. Once you scan a product's barcode, both apps show what it costs at other stores and online. Many big-box retailers offer a price-match guarantee at the register when you show that … Read more

Red Mac Pro to be auctioned off by Bono's charity

In photos, it looks a bit like the red pill from "The Matrix." But it's not. It's the new Mac Pro. In red.

The item will be up for auction on November 23 at Sotheby's in New York City, as part of an auction hosted by (Product)RED, the charity fronted by U2's Bono.

The machine is expected to go for $40,000 to $60,000 at auction. Apple showed off the Mac Pro, with its normal black design, at a live event this week in San Francisco. It will cost $2,999 and … Read more

Freefallin': Full POV video of Baumgartner's Stratos dive

Last year, Felix Baumgartner became the real-life version of David Bowie's "The Man Who Fell to Earth" when he took a daredevil freefall from nearly 128,000 feet above the planet's surface. The Red Bull-sponsored Stratos mission kept viewers on edge for nine breathtaking minutes.

It was exciting enough to view the external video of the freefall, but now Red Bull has released a full point-of-view video that lets you experience the jump all over again from Baumgartner's viewpoint.… Read more
