Review: YourPortfolio is a stock tracker with a slick interface

YourPortfolio is designed to show you immediately if your stocks are up, down, or even, and how much you have netted for the day based on that performance. It works, as indicated, and looks pretty good, but extremely slow loading times are such that the app is nearly impossible to use as a quick reference on a regular basis throughout the day.

When you load the app the first time, you'll wait some time for it to load. It took two minutes to load the data on our first use and then close to a minute each time after … Read more

Patent activists: Let's light up Intellectual Ventures' IP portfolio

One of Intellectual Ventures' biggest secrets is under attack.

The Bellevue, Wash.-based patent firm and invention lab, co-founded in 2000 by former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myrhvold, owns more than 40,000 patents or pending patents and keeps a tight lid on its collection. So tight, in fact, that you can't see it unless you partner with the company and sign a non-disclosure agreement.

The end result can be that companies with products that might infringe on one of those patents, or that simply want to license one of IV's patents, don't exactly know what they're … Read more

Apple and Microsoft to team up for Kodak's patents?

Apple and Microsoft could once again join forces to bid on a collection of patents from a beleaguered technology giant, says a new report.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the two companies -- along with Nathan Myhrvold's Intellectual Ventures -- plan to band together to snatch up some or all of Kodak's patent portfolio. Initial bids for that collection of 1,100 patents are due at the beginning of next week.

The companies could face an opposing team made up of other rivals including Google, Samsung, HTC, and LG, along with San Francisco-based patent buyer and licensor … Read more

AOL, lacking better options, hires firm to sell its patents

AOL's effort to sell off a chunk of its patent portfolio keeps chugging ahead. The company has now reportedly hired investment banking advisory firm Evercore Partners to help strike a deal.

Citing three people with knowledge of the hire, Bloomberg says AOL tapped Evercore to find a buyer for more than 800 patents and to "explore other strategic options" -- code for a possible sale or private buyout of the entire company.

An Evercore spokesperson declined to comment on the report, and AOL didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The beleaguered Internet pioneer is … Read more

iLuv's slightly different take on a Kindle Fire case

Companies send over samples for various accessories, and I try to highlight some of the better ones for various devices. Case in point: iLuv's Portfolio Stand for Kindle Fire.

It's a nice, trim case that fits snuggly and turns into a stand by unhitching the Fire from the bottom of the case. It's a design we've seen before with iPad cases, and it works better than you'd think.

Drawbacks: this one isn't made of leather (it is very good faux leather, however) and it's fairly expensive at $49.99 (though it can be … Read more

Far out: Beanpad Portfolio puts a little beanbag under your iPad

LAS VEGAS--Beanbags are typically associated with lounging, but they've always been more for people than gadgets.

Santa Fe Springs, Calif.-based Vantage Point has trying to shake that up with its Beanpad Portfolio stand for the iPad.

Like the Beanpad stand the company launched last October, the Portfolio has a beanbag that can be used to set the iPad on uneven surfaces. But the Portfolio does away with a mount entirely, and instead consists solely of a full leather case with Velcro backing. When you're not using the Beanpad stand, you can cart around your iPad in just … Read more

Report: Sale of InterDigital's patent portfolio delayed

The sale of InterDigital's patent portfolio has been pushed back until early September to give potential buyers a better chance to evaluate it, according to a new report.

Reuters said today the sale of InterDigital's portfolio, which stretches to some 8,800 granted patents and nearly 10,000 patent applications, is being delayed until after Labor Day. The sale was originally slated for next week, sources familiar with the situation told the outlet, but potential buyers want to vet the portfolio in light of recent landmark intellectual-property purchases.

Among the reported companies that were approached or otherwise interested … Read more

Report: Samsung in hunt for InterDigital's patents

Samsung is said to be "examining" the patent portfolio of wireless technology company InterDigital to help bolster its existing collection of patents and other intellectual property, according to a report by Bloomberg.

The outlet says Samsung's been approached to make a bid on the portfolio, which is being shopped around ahead of a potential sale. Late last month InterDigital announced that it had hired Evercore Partners and Barclays Capital to consider strategic alternatives for the company, a move that included a sale of the company itself.

InterDigital's intellectual property is of special interest to handset makers, … Read more

Pro Photo Uploader

ProStockMaster for Windows sounds like it might be an investment tool or perhaps something to do with drag racing, but in fact it's a free digital photo manager that offers something extra for professional photographers: the ability to directly upload images from your PC to one of several stock photo agencies. Even if you don't have an account to access, you can use it to edit your image collections and data, including IPTC and EXIF data. It can even help professional photographers keep track of their earnings.

When we installed and opened ProStockMaster, a pop-up gave us an … Read more
