A deeper dive with the LG G Pro 2's camera

It's been a month since LG's massive 5.9-inch G Pro 2 launched in Korea, and the device has been slowly gaining traction with further roll outs in other Asian countries including Hong Kong and Taiwan. Although no information has been released about its potential availability in Europe and US, we were able to review the unlocked handset here in our San Francisco offices, and were impressed by its sharp 1080p screen and ultra fast quad-core performance.

But the phone also sports some serious camera chops as well. Giving the G Pro 2 a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and … Read more

LG to launch G Watch with Android Wear

LG is getting in on the Android Wear game.

The company has built a smartwatch in partnership with Google that it will call the G Watch, LG confirmed on Tuesday. The G Watch runs Google's modified wearables platform, Android Wear.

Engadget earlier reported the news.

LG didn't provide any details on the device, but an image in the Engadget report shows the device with flight times. The G Watch will work with voice commands and will come to market sometime in the second quarter, LG said.

Google on Tuesday announced Android Wear. The platform is a modified version … Read more

LG's G Pro 2 sales spread to big Asian markets

LG Electronics has begun selling its G Pro 2 in some Asian countries, but people in other regions who want the big Android phone will have to wait to see if carriers express any interest.

The phone has a large 5.9-inch 1920x1080 screen, good performance, Android 4.4. KitKat, and the Knock Code mechanism for waking up and unlocking the phone. It's a companion to the LG's flagship G2 Android phone and several lower-end models with which the company is trying to make headway against its Korean rival, Samsung.

LG began selling it in February in Korea … Read more

How the LG G2 looked to 'Gangnam Style' for inspiration

BARCELONA, Spain -- Ramchan Woo is a big fan of Korean pop superstar Psy.

OK, with nearly 2 billion views on YouTube, who didn't at one time bob to the rhythm of the mega-viral "Gangnam Style" music video? But Woo, who is the head of LG's mobile platform planning division, did more than just sing and dance along to Psy's infectiously catchy beat, he used the artist and his video as inspiration for the Korean company's flagship G2 smartphone.

"He was different," Woo said as he sat next to me during a … Read more

LG's upcoming G3 could have a 2K display

Slowly but surely, pieces of the LG G3 puzzle seem to be falling into place. Rumors point to a May debut for the device, which means that the pace of rumors should quicken over the next few weeks.

A user agent profile spotted on LG's Web site by frequent Twitter tipster @evleaks suggests that the handset-maker has a D850 model in the works. Considering that the LG D800 is the model number for the current G2 flagship, it's logical that the D850 here would be its eventual successor.

The XML document also reveals the screen display. Listed at … Read more

How to set up Knock Code on the LG G Pro 2

In an effort to compete with Samsung and its powerful Galaxy S brand, LG announced the G2 in the fall of 2013. The flagship smartphone was the company's first device to be released on every major US carrier. In addition to high-end specs, the G2 stood out from the crowd with rear facing buttons and numerous unique software features. One of those features was KnockOn, which allowed users to turn the phone's display on or off by simply double-tapping the screen.

The KnockOn feature has since made its way to a number of other LG phones, such as … Read more

LG G3 could be dustproof and water resistant, report indicates

LG's successor to the G2 could be both water resistant and dust-proof, according to Korea's ETNews.

Presumably, the handset will be known as the G3 and will make its debut in the second half of the year. Hardware specifications are a bit muddy at this point, but the rumor is already churning. Early chatter suggests a Quad HD (1,440x2,560 pixels) display, a 64-bit processor, and a 16-megapixel rear camera may be in order for the smartphone.

Looking ahead, I'd anticipate more handset manufacturers to adopt water resistance and dust proof capabilities. Sony, for example, has … Read more

New LG G Flex ad: Gag reflex?

There are some things you shouldn't do before breakfast.

Examine your bank balance, for example. Or listen to a discussion at the United Nations.

To this list, I feel we can surely add a new ad for the LG G Flex phone.

Should you have been too busy searching for a Mr. Bit who founded Bitcoin lately, the LG G Flex is a rather interesting phone that wraps itself around your face like a lover who thinks you have money.

To those tasked with advertising it, there might have been many ideas immediately rattling in their brains.

Instead, LG … Read more

LG G Pro 2: Big and bright, but short on style

Editors' note, March 13, 2014: This review has been updated with additional data and call performance analysis.

With the new G Pro 2, LG hopes to make would-be Note 3 buyers think twice. Like Samsung's popular phablet, the Pro 2 boasts a huge, bright, and colorful HD screen as well as an excellent 13-megapixel camera. LG also packs in plenty of software tricks and UI enhancements to throw veteran Android users a curve or two.

Of course the G Pro 2 will have a tough time deflecting potential Note 3 shoppers off target. While LG's latest creation matches … Read more
