Amazon workers' lawsuit to be heard by US Supreme Court

The US Supreme Court selects very few cases to hear, but it appears a case involving Amazon workers is on its way to the country's highest court.

The Supreme Court decided on Monday to hear a case about employees having to wait in long lines to go through security checks at the end of their shifts, according to Reuters. The case will address whether the e-commerce giant should pay workers for this time spent, which can last as long as 30 minutes.

Foursquare makes it easy to find what you'll love

With its latest update, Foursquare has evolved beyond its roots of checking in to businesses and unlocking badges and special offers from those businesses. Now the app lets you explore your local area based on data culled from other Foursquare users while still retaining the gamelike features of its roots.

While the original app was always well-designed, the new features make it even more useful. Recommendations for smaller towns can be sparse, and the settings can be somewhat overwhelming, but it remains an essential download for avid Foursquare users.

The basics When you first launch Foursquare, you'll need to … Read more

Use Launch Center Pro and Foursquare to speed up your check-ins

Launch Center Pro, the popular iOS automation app, takes advantage of third-party apps that have URL schemes. These schemes are nothing more than ways for apps to talk to one another in iOS, sharing information between one another.

Previously, Foursquare was listed as a supported app for Launch Center Pro, but it was removed after a recent update removed the URL scheme setup Launch Center Pro had been using.

By looking at the Foursquare developer documentation you can see that URL schemes are still part of the app, but they need to be more specific than in the past. Instead … Read more

Engineer predicts Apple's iTunes Radio will put an end to overly loud recordings

I caught up with my old friend, mastering and recording engineer Bob Katz at the Audio Engineering Society convention held last week in NYC. He was there to proclaim an end to the "Loudness Wars," which refers to the overuse of dynamic range compression to flatten the soft-to-loud volume changes that naturally occur in music. Katz was way ahead of the pack in decrying the overzealous use of compression in mastering recordings, he has been in the trenches, fighting the good fight for more than 20 years.

Katz is thrilled that Apple's new streaming music service, iTunes Radio, … Read more

Facebook, Cisco partner to power Wi-Fi check-in at stores

Facebook just "friended" Cisco Systems.

The two companies are partnering up to provide restaurants, hotels, retailers, and other public locations with an integrated Wi-Fi check-in experience that ties into the Facebook network. Such a service would allow retailers to get more data on its customers, allowing for better targeted advice, advertising, or discounts.

The initiative is called "Cisco Connected Mobile Experience with Facebook Wi-Fi," a long-winded name for a bundle of services and router equipment that's being tested by several businesses, including two restaurants in the Bonefish Grill chain.

The partnership is the latest in … Read more

Simple tool checks multiple Apple stores for iPhone 5S stock

For those still on the hunt for an iPhone 5S and planning to buy it from an Apple retail store, there's a new, unofficial tool that makes it very simple to search multiple stores at once.

iPhone-Check, made by developer Mordy Tikotzky, just has you plug in your ZIP code, then pick what color and carrier you want. It then shows what phones are available at varying capacities at all of Apple's stores in that area.

The tool is US-only for now. It's also unclear how up to date it is with Apple's own store data. … Read more

Foursquare lets businesses boost their profiles in search

Forget McDonald's and Macy's, small businesses can now pay Foursquare to make their ads appear higher in search results.

Foursquare announced Tuesday that it was rolling out self-serve ads for small businesses, with the goal of letting users discover new locales they normally wouldn't know about. The way it works is businesses pay a little extra for the self-serve ads and then their profiles are ranked higher in user search results.

"The idea behind these new ads is simple -- connect people looking for somewhere to go with businesses that want to drive traffic to their … Read more
