Homeguard (64-bit) review

Veridium's Homeguard protects you and your kids online and offline by blocking offensive material, monitoring and recording activity, and limiting access time. It monitors and filters email, chat, and other social media; takes activity-based screenshots; and sends email notifications. It runs in the background, undetectable and inaccessible without the master password. It can't be closed, bypassed with proxies, or uninstalled without administrative permission. Homeguard is free to try for 15 days. We tried Homeguard's 64-bit version in Windows 7 Home Premium SP1.

Homeguard's installer prompted us to create a password, write it down, and save it … Read more

McAfee Labs Stinger review

McAfee Labs Stinger is a quick, portable virus scanner, but it lacks the features you'd find in more dynamic virus suites. If you need active protection as you download files and other things you'd expect from programs like Avira or avast!, this isn't the program you want. However, if you're comfortable just finding problems after they've infected you, this program will dig deeper than some virus-scanning apps.

Though this is anti-virus software, it's not in the same class as Windows Defender or other programs, because it doesn't offer active protection, i.e., warnings … Read more

More signs that Apple A8 chip production is approaching

Apple may be getting closer to production of its A8 processor as news from Asia points to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) as the main supplier.

Taiwan-based TechNews (via MacRumors) reported that TSMC has already started production of Apple's next-generation A8 processor.

That report jibes with a source who CNET spoke to December. That person, who is familiar with TSMC's plans, said that Taiwanese contract chip manufacturer had already begun making Apple's A series processors. To date, Samsung has been the sole manufacturer of Apple's processors.

But TechNews takes this a step further, claiming that TSMC … Read more

Folder Size (64-bit) is a tool that displays the total folder size for all of your folders both in Windows Explorer and in a separate list. When you install Folder Size, it runs from your taskbar in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, and it automatically adds a column for folder size to the Windows Explorer details view displaying your file details. If you want, … Read more

Finally, here come the 64-bit Windows 8.1 tablets

At least one major PC maker is expected to show an Intel "Bay Trail" tablet running 64-bit Windows 8.1 at Mobile World Congress, according to a source familiar with upcoming plans for those tablets.

Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo, and Samsung are some of the most prominent PC makers to offer Windows 8.1 tablets running on Intel's Bay Trail chip. To date, Windows tablets based on Intel's newest -- and redesigned -- quad-core Atom processor have run in 32-bit mode.
