Review: SmartEncryptor lets you keep your files safe and secure

SmartEncryptor protects your files from unwanted views through state-of-the-art encryption techniques, including those used by the US government. If you want to make sure all your important files and documents are safe and secure, especially when you're sending them via e-mail, this app offers the type of protection you're looking for.

While the process the SmartEncryptor uses to encrypt your files is probably quite complicated, the interface is not. There are clearly-labeled buttons for adding or removing files and for encrypting them. You can choose the files you want to encrypt by clicking the "Add File" … Read more

Review: Singer Song Reader for Mac offers numerous lyric sources for your music

Singer Song Reader for Mac solves the problem of forgotten or misheard lyrics once and for all, showing onscreen the exact lyrics for any song you listen to over iTunes. The result is a very useful app that, while not particularly polished or attractive, is very fast and very effective at providing multiple lyric sources for almost any song you load in iTunes.

Installation of Singer Song Reader is very fast and once done the app will open and show you a blank screen with a number of small squares next to lyric sources. When you open iTunes and start … Read more

Review: Keep an eye on your graphic card stats with GPU Meter

GPU Meter displays information on your graphics card, from usage to temperature, as well as clock speed and other useful stats. It installs as a Windows gadget and sits on your desktop. If you want an easy way to see GPU information at a glance, GPU Meter fits the bill.

The gadget installs in seconds and places a very small window in the upper-right corner of your desktop, which you can move anywhere. Initially, GPU Meter's window was too small for us to view, but a tabbed Options menu is easily accessible from a right sidebar menu and you … Read more

Review: LightMan Coverter switches formats just fine, but comes with add-ons

LightMan Converter does a fine job of converting your files, but it loads your computer down with junk programs, as well. Since there are programs that are just as good and don't take your computer hostage like this, this one is tough to like.

This program's installation process is loaded with add-on programs that will take over your browser and search page with toolbars and other junk. However, unlike other programs that let you opt out of them, this one forces you to keep the check boxes checked if you want to download the program. If you're … Read more

Review: LightMan Player plays your files, but is bundled with unwanted add-on programs

LightMan Player gives you plenty of format support, but it's not a pretty media player by anyone's standards. It also shoves some nasty toolbars and add-on programs on your computer. It's nice that it plays just about any format, but most people will want a player that's a little easier on the eyes.

This media player doesn't stick to just music or videos; it can play both without much of a problem. It offers impressive format support, as well. During testing, the program handled every format we threw at it with no issues. As far … Read more

Review: LightMan TagEditor helps organize files, if you don't mind nasty add-on programs

LightMan TagEditor lets you edit your music files' tags, but it makes you suffer through a bunch of add-on programs to do it. Worse still, the program doesn't do much of the work for you, making you manually edit your files instead of filling them in for you. All told, there isn't much that makes this program better than other options or even Windows' default file renaming tool.

LightMan TagEditor lets you fill in the gaps in your music files so you can have a more complete track listing. It doesn't tap into any database, though, forcing … Read more

Review: Prevent toddler keyboard and mouse mishaps with KidKeyLock

KidKeyLock performs lock key and mouse actions, but it could be easier to use. As it is, this seems like an unfinished app that has promise but needs some polishing.

Things got off to a not-so-good start when we unzipped the folder and found three folders. With labels like bin, HTML, and various, it wasn't clear where to go. KidKeyLock doesn't install, so we searched for an EXE file. In bin, we found two that were duplicates except for an extra EXE at the end of one file. Both seemed to produce the same results and the KidKeyLock … Read more

Review: Bookmark your text files with PageSector for Mac

One of the drawbacks to reading digital documents is that there's often no easy way to mark important parts or note where you left off. PageSector for Mac is a basic program that lets users do exactly that. It's not particularly fancy or sophisticated, but it will allow you to create bookmarks within a variety of different types of text files.

PageSector for Mac's interface isn't the most intuitive thing we've ever seen, but it didn't take too long for us to figure it out. A conspicuous "Open" button makes it easy … Read more

Review: Verify malware scans with NoraScan's cloud-based analysis

Noralabs' NoraScan is a fast-scanning anti-malware utility that uses cloud-based knowledge to verify suspicious files as safe and to quarantine or remove threats. It's not a primary antivirus solution but works alongside your other security software to provide extra protection. NoraScan scans in Safe Mode, too, so it can find and remove rootkits and other stubborn infections that keep Windows from starting. The latest release, v2.3, has improved 64-bit integration and additional warnings when users try to quarantine unverified files.

NoraScan's white-and-blue interface includes all of its options, such as checkboxes to enable Rootkit behavior analysis and … Read more

Review: Access secure passwords with KeePass Password Safe Professional Portable

KeePass Password Safe Professional Portable stores secure (i.e., long) passwords and cryptographic keys in a secure database and recalls them with a single master password or key-disk (such as a USB drive). With KeePass, you no longer need to memorize long alphanumeric passwords, or, worse, keep using the same unsecure, easy-to-remember passwords. KeePass Portable is just like the installed version, only it runs from a thumb drive or similar device without installation. It's a great way to back up your KeePass Pro installation since you can open and view your password database on any compatible PC (Windows 98 … Read more
