Sonos 4.1 update improves Spotify, playlist support

Now that Logitech's Squeezebox is out of the picture, Sonos is one of the best streaming devices you can buy, but it hasn't been without its niggles. One of the previous criticisms of the Sonos software was that playlist support was limited and couldn't incorporate songs from Spotify; the newest software update promises to remedy this.

The Sonos 4.1 update allows users to not only manage their Spotify playlists and playlist folders but also to create new Sonos playlists from multiple music sources.

Sonos says you can now select tracks from any music source and add … Read more

LG's Google TVs to get Jelly Bean update in Q3

Google TV, the ambitious living room operating system often maligned as slow to update, difficult to use, and less focused than alternatives like Roku or standard Smart TV suites, will finally get a major operating system upgrade later this year.

LG announced today at Google I/O that its Google TVs will get the update to Android version 4.2.2, aka Jelly Bean, in the third quarter. LG is the only manufacturer still selling actual televisions with Google TV built-in, although a few set-top boxes are available, too. Top 7 products that should still exist

Last week, Panasonic announced that it was considering cutting its plasma production after next year; this is especially troubling, as its 2013 lineup looks like the company's best yet.

Panasonic TVs like the ZT60 and VT60 could (finally) give our reference TV the Pioneer Kuro a run for its money, and for a much more affordable price. We're not conspiracy theorists, but for one reason or other sometimes the best products just aren't the most successful. Watch out, Apple's rumored TV!

Panasonic's sad news got us thinking about the many other products that have gone … Read more

Teenage Engineering's cubelike OD-11 streams music straight from the cloud

LAS VEGAS--Wireless audio at CES 2013 has been almost entirely dominated by the idea of streaming music directly from your smartphone, usually via Bluetooth.

Teenage Engineering's newly announced OD-11 is taking a different approach, which it calls the Cloud Speaker. The cubelike speaker actually borrows its design from Swedish audio engineer Stig Carlsson, whose original OD-11 in 1974 featured the same angled tweeter and woofer that directs sound out the the top of the speaker, rather than a more traditional front-facing design. The idea is to throw the sound into a room, without a defined sweet spot that standard … Read more

Sonos adds AirPlay-like streaming from iOS devices

Sonos has released updates to its iPhone and iPad apps that allow iOS 6 users to access their device's onboard music library and stream it through their Sonos system.

While the Sonos doesn't add AirPlay as such, the update lets the user access iTunes from within the Sonos app menu, something that most streaming and DLNA apps don't allow for non-AirPlay devices.

The device's music will appear on the menu under "This iPhone," and will list songs, playlists, and podcasts.

Sonos describes this as a major update; it follows two other recent updates that … Read more
