Apple challenges Microsoft, Google with iWork collaborative tools

Apple has rolled out a new version of iWork that lets you collaborate in the cloud with other people.

Announced today at Apple's iPad launch event, the new iWork uses Apple's iWork Beta service to let you share and work on files in the Pages, Keynote, and Numbers apps.

Demonstrating the new feature, Apple Internet Software and Services Vice President Eddy Cue showed how he was able to make changes to a document that was just created by iWork Vice President Roger Rosner. The changes made by different people show up in real time.

iCloud can now sync bookmarks with Firefox and Chrome

iCloud users can now sync their bookmarks across all of the major browsers used in Windows.

Released on Wednesday, the iCloud Control Panel 3.0 for Windows can keep your bookmarks in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome synchronized with your Safari bookmarks on the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and the Mac. Previously, iCloud supported only IE.

Apple rolls out iOS 7-inspired iCloud.com redesign

On the eve of the launch of iOS 7, Apple relaunched its iCloud.com services Web site on Tuesday with a redesigned user interface that takes its visual cues from the new version of the company's mobile operating system.

First previewed in beta earlier this summer, the Web portal has dumped the dark linen background for a soft blue background sporting blurred orbs. Icons have also been redesigned for Mail, Calendar, Reminders, Notes, and Find my iPhone Web apps to match the new animated background found in iOS 7.

Apple revamps its AppleCare contact page, adds chat options

Apple has updated its online support site to now include chat among other options for communicating with Apple technicians and support personnel.

Apple's support options for its customers have been enhanced over the years. While it has always had telephone support and maintained a community support forum, it has added alternatives as well.

With the introduction of its Apple Retail Store program, its Genius bar and support staff have provided an in-person experience for solving problems with Apple products, and more recently it changed its online support options to include a service called "Express Lane," where you … Read more

Apple's iWork for iCloud Beta now open to everyone

Apple's iWork for iCloud Beta is now open to anyone with an Apple ID.

iCloud users who log into their accounts on Friday will find that they can access beta versions of Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. Upon choosing one of those applications, they'll have free access to the productivity suite, and create everything from presentations to spreadsheets.

Apple has previously offered iWork for iCloud Beta to developers. The company also quietly tested out the service with some invited users. It appears now, however, that the apps are available to anyone on iCloud.

Apple iCloud services offline for a few million users

Update at 9:30 a.m. PT: All services were restored as of 8:30 a.m. PT.

Apple iCloud users were hit by yet another outage, though this one seems to have affected a relatively small percentage of users.

As of Thursday 4 a.m. PT, Apple's status page reveals issues with iMessage, Photo Stream, Documents in the Cloud, Backup and Restore, and iPhoto Journals. Apple's description of the problem reports that people may be unable to use those services and unable to send or download attachments in iMessage.

Apple's design overhaul for iOS has spilled over to the beta version of its iCloud service.

A new version of the site (beta.iCloud.com), which has Web versions of some of Apple's iOS apps, now sports a similar look and feel to iOS 7, which Apple is expected to release next month.

So far, the changeover has affected e-mail, contacts, calendar, reminders, notes, and find my iPhone. The beta versions of Apple's trio of iWork apps, which Apple is still testing to users, remains unchanged.

Apple adds new countries to iCloud movie support

Millions more people can now watch their favorite synced movies via iTunes in the Cloud.

Apple added movie support to its iTunes in the Cloud in eight new countries -- Austria, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Switzerland -- now have Apple's cloud-based movie support, according to TUAW and others.

This means users in these countries can purchase movies from iTunes that are then automatically synced to the cloud and made available for viewing on any eligible device -- computer, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Apple TV.

Some iCloud users have been able to get their hands on iWork for iCloud Beta, according to a new report.

iCloud users on Friday started receiving invites to try out iWork for iCloud Beta, Engadget is reporting. The application, which allows for document creation and management in iCloud, was previously only available to developers.
