Billy Joel, Jimmy Fallon sing with an iPad app (No, it's really good)

Billy Joel didn't seem too sure at first.

One imagines he's a man of the old school: the dusty piano stool, the fool sitting in the corner talking into his beer.

He may be slightly less of a man for gizmos and apps.

Somehow, Jimmy Fallon, ever the boyish enthusiast, talked him into singing along with an iPad app called Loopy. This allows you to layer one track over another, so that you, too, can make like "Bohemian Rhapsody" (say).

Instead of "Bohemian Rhapsody," Fallon chose the "Boeem-a-weh" song. Yes, "The … Read more

iOS 7.1 jailbroken but only on the iPhone 4

An enterprising hacker has jailbroken iOS 7.1, at least as seen on a YouTube video.

Posted by self-dubbed "insane programmer" winocm, the silent video shows a jailbroken iPhone 4 powering up in untethered mode. Winocm takes the phone from screen to screen and makes sure to hit the Settings screen to show that the phone is indeed running iOS 7.1.

So does this mean all iOS users running 7.1 can now jailbreak their devices? Apparently not.

A comment to the video from an account called "All things jailbreak" says the jailbreak works only … Read more

Most China Mobile 4G users bought iPhone, chairman says

This might be a good year for Apple in China.

China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua on Thursday said that "most" of his company's 1.3 million 4G customers have bought the iPhone -- an important success rate for Apple, considering the carrier only started selling the company's handset in January. And despite that figure appearing to be small, China Mobile reported that it expects its total number of 4G subscribers to jump to 50 million by year's end. If Apple can keep its lead, that could mean a boatload of iPhone sales in China.

It took only 90 minutes for Moov, makers of a watch-like fitness wearable, to hit its crowdfunding goal of $40,000. Two weeks have passed since then, and Moov is already to date the most successful crowdfunding fitness campaign -- of which there are many, on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, attempting to serve up a better Jawnone or Fitbit or Nike FuelBand that tells us how to fix ourselves and not just what's wrong.

Preorder sales now near $1 million, equating to more than 16,000 devices the startup says it will deliver by July. A second, even larger batch … Read more

Retro-style games are modern classics

After reviewing Devious Dungeon, it occurred to me that the classic platformer game genre is far from dead. Even though the graphics for smartphone games have reached amazing heights with games like Real Racing 3, the Modern Combat franchise, and countless other top-tier titles, what's interesting to me is that games that look like they could be played on a '90s-era gaming console continue to be popular with today's gamers.

A steady stream of retro-looking platformer titles have had great success and continue to fly up the App Store's most-popular lists, relying more on tried-and-true gameplay than … Read more

Word has it that iPhone, iPad, and Mac users will soon get to access more than 150 movies and about 200 TV shows for free when flying on United Airlines, according to Patently Apple.

Want your iPhone 4 to run faster? Install iOS 7.1

Good news for iPhone 4 owners: Apple's iOS 7.1 update, released earlier this week, should make your handset feel a little snappier.

The bad news: It still won't run as fast as it did on iOS 6.

So writes Ars Technica, which conducted basic iPhone 4 performance tests with iOS 6.1.3, iOS 7, and 7.1. Specifically, the blog clocked load times for various stock apps like Camera, Messages, and Mail, and also the time to complete a cold boot.

The results: iOS 7.1 boots a bit more quickly than iOS 7 (43.1 … Read more

Apple reportedly eyes iTunes Radio as separate app in iOS 8

iTunes Radio could split off as its own separate app for iOS 8.

Apple is now testing its music service as a standalone app for the next version of iOS, according to 9to5Mac, which cited "sources briefed on the plans." The idea is that Apple could feature and market iTunes Radio more readily as its own app than as an option tucked away into the iOS Music app.

For iOS 8, iTunes Radio would be pre-installed and borrow its look and feel from the familiar Music app. iOS users could listen to Featured Stations, create and manage their … Read more

How to disable or limit in-app purchases in iOS

Worried about your kids running up a big bill for in-app purchases on an iPhone or iPad? You can avoid sticker shock by disabling or limiting those purchases.

The parental controls that limit in-app purchases aren't new. They've been around since Apple added them in iOS 4.3 in 2011. But the option is worth revisiting in light of Apple's recent reaction to the legal trouble caused by the in-app purchasing process.

You must enter your iTunes password to confirm an in-app purchase. But by default, that password is good for 15 minutes. Make additional in-app purchases … Read more
