Billy Joel, Jimmy Fallon sing with an iPad app (No, it's really good)

Billy Joel didn't seem too sure at first.

One imagines he's a man of the old school: the dusty piano stool, the fool sitting in the corner talking into his beer.

He may be slightly less of a man for gizmos and apps.

Somehow, Jimmy Fallon, ever the boyish enthusiast, talked him into singing along with an iPad app called Loopy. This allows you to layer one track over another, so that you, too, can make like "Bohemian Rhapsody" (say).

Instead of "Bohemian Rhapsody," Fallon chose the "Boeem-a-weh" song. Yes, "The … Read more

Apple envisions stylus with extendable, multitouch nib

Apple wants to cook up a more powerful yet sensitive stylus for your tablet.

Published Thursday by the US Patent and Trademark Office, a patent filing dubbed simply "Input Device Having Extendable Nib" sees the nib of the stylus as the key to its power. The nib would be able to extend, thereby offering different capabilities based on its length.

At its smallest length, the nib would have a limited number of areas through which it could interact with a tablet. But extending the nib would increase the number of multitouch points, giving it the ability to create … Read more

Why an 8GB iPhone 5C just isn't a good deal

Please, please, please, don't buy the 8GB iPhone 5C.

Apple on Tuesday introduced a version of its new, brightly colored iPhone that comes with half the storage of the former cheapest model but also a smaller price tag. In the UK, for example, the 8GB iPhone 5C costs £429 ($712) versus £469 ($779) for the 16GB model. For now, the 8GB iPhone 5C is available only in the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and China. US customers will have to settle for the 16GB version or choose another iPhone model like the (non-4G) 4S.

iPad with Retina Display makes $399 comeback, knocks out iPad 2

Apple tweaked its iPad lineup Tuesday morning, bringing back the fourth-generation iPad with Retina Display in place of the elderly iPad 2.

Available with only 16GB of storage, the comeback tablet is listed on Apple's US Web site either with just Wi-Fi for $399, or with Wi-Fi and cellular for $529. Consumers can choose between models from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Apple CEO Tim Cook canned the Retina-enabled iPad last year when he launched the super-skinny iPad Air. The high-end iPad still starts at $499, while the Retina iPad Mini is still $399.

Discontinued iPad 4 may see return with 8GB iPhone 5C

Editors' note: Shortly after this story was posted, Apple unveiled its new 8GB iPhone 5C and a $399 version of its formerly discontinued fourth-generation iPad with Retina Display.

Apple is reportedly planning a couple of iOS product refreshes, one of which could see the return of the iPad 4 to retailer shelves.

After reports Monday that the company was planning to release an 8GB iPhone 5C as early as Tuesday, another report suggested that Apple would also reintroduce the discontinued iPad 4 with Retina display. A source told 9to5Mac that shipments of the discontinued tablet are arriving at Apple retail … Read more

Retro-style games are modern classics

After reviewing Devious Dungeon, it occurred to me that the classic platformer game genre is far from dead. Even though the graphics for smartphone games have reached amazing heights with games like Real Racing 3, the Modern Combat franchise, and countless other top-tier titles, what's interesting to me is that games that look like they could be played on a '90s-era gaming console continue to be popular with today's gamers.

A steady stream of retro-looking platformer titles have had great success and continue to fly up the App Store's most-popular lists, relying more on tried-and-true gameplay than … Read more

Apple eyes fingerprint sensors to connect various devices

Apple debuted its fingerprint sensor with the release of its iPhone 5S in September. Currently, the smartphone is the only Apple device that totes the security scanner. But, it looks like Apple may be looking into using biometric data to let users connect all of their devices for wireless pairing and cross-device communication.

An Apple patent application for "a system for wireless pairing and communication between devices using biometrics" went public on the US Patent and Trademark Office's Web site on Thursday. The tech giant originally applied for the patent on August 31, 2012.

1981 DeLorean modded with in-dash iPad interface

Dr. Emmett Brown made a good point in "Back to the Future" when he said to Marty McFly, "The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?"

If you plan on roaming the streets in a 1981 DeLorean, you might as well customize it to your liking. That's exactly what YouTube user DMCPat says in a video about the impressive modifications he made to his classic DeLorean, including adding an iPad Mini interface.

This 1981 DeLorean is a Vin 1880, which means it's one of the first 1,000 cars shipped to the US. It has many modifications, including a rear spoiler, a high-mounted third brake light, remote lock/unlock, new wheels and steering wheel, seal-beamed LED lights, LED fog lights, blue LED interior door lights, and blue LED underbody lights, just to name a few. … Read more
